AMD K2 450 & Windows XP - How will it run?

(also: 256mb ram / 32mb ati radeon / 40gb western digital harddrive)

I like to play (winamp) burn (nero) and download (winmx) music.
I'm not much of a gamer, but I may play games such as Starcraft.

I'm sure the AMD 450 and Win98 SE could handle the music and light gaming,
but I don't know if by having WinXP, even these programs would run slow. ??

If the AMD K2 450 could run WinXP, my music programs, and basic games without much hesitation,
then how would this configuration handle programs like Office XP, Autocad and/or Mathcad, and MS VB C++?

OR - Can I format WinXP or is like Win2000? If i can format XP and reinstall 98, I'll just give XP a shot...

You can duel boot if you want to give it a shot. It is like Windows 2000. It's basically Windows 2000 anyway with happy colors on top. It will run OK. Not terrific but OK. You might want a little more RAM before you do that but it's not a major issue. I've installed it on less and it worked. If I were you I'd just duel boot it to see how you like it.
 
For XP I recommend minimum 512 MB RAM. It will run on 256 too, but slowly. With 512 MB RAM you'll have no problems with all those programs.
If you just want to try it, leave the hdd file system to be FAT32 (don't convert it to NTFS). Doing so you could reinstall win98 without loosing your data.
 
Thanks a lot...For clarification, Win XP setup will give me the option to:

- keep win98se and install winxp also
- format win98se and install winxp *
* (or I have to format my harddrive myself?)

- install winxp with FAT32 system either way

...Sorry this is becoming a software question...
Will XP run slower with FAT32 than NTFS?

Hey I have Windows XP Pro installed on my sisters computer which has 128mb of ram, 32 meg graphics card, and a Pentium II 350mhz MMX and it works as well as windows ME did. It is faster actually. Maybe this is just a lucky caser but a friend of mine, believe it or not ran windows XP as a server on a 133mhz Pentium and it booted up in a whopping 50 seconds! So I think it depends. 128 gets it running fine on my sis computer...fine given how old it is.

It will give you the options ot either upgrade or install a fresh copy. Choose to install a fresh copy. This is when you are installing it under windows and not booting from the CD.
 
so when i'm in windows
and run win xp setup
choose install fresh copy
and the install starts
i will get the option to choose ntfs or stay fat32
 
XP runs on my laptop fine (sig)...also running SP2 with older games like HL2, Red Faction...boots very fast and is decent in app loading. 512mb would definetly be better...but 128mb will hold you over decently.
 
the minimum requirements for XP is 233MHz or better (they recommend 300Mhz or better)





At least 64MB of RAM and at least 2GB that can be partitioned.







You can install XP on any partition with an existing OS but that OS will be erased. Make sure your hardware can be supported by the NTFS file system ...which you can find out by checking your HCL (hardware compatibility list) ...XP is a lot better about supporting hardware than windows 2000 .. and of course NT is worthless when it comes to hardware compatibility



If you already have windows 98 on it... you can dual boot your machine. XP makes that simple..



but.. If you delete 98 and then install XP.. YOU SHOULD not install 98 AFTER installing XP.... always install the OLDER software FIRST so when you install XP with 98 already on the machine, XP will be able to see everything on the 98 partition.

W2K would be a bad idea ... for optimal performance with W2K you need a decent system. XP seems to fare better when the system isnt so hot,

If you already have windows 98 on it... you can dual boot your machine. XP makes that simple..

i thought a 900mhz intel was about the same as a 500mhz AMD...it has less ram than his and a smaller gfz card...maybe i did a bad comparison :(

yah i think ur right...400mhz is alot of a jump, even if AMD is more efficient that intel.
 
i thought a 900mhz intel was about the same as a 500mhz AMD...it has less ram than his and a smaller gfz card...maybe I did a bad comparison

God no. The P3s are incredibly efficient with only 10-ish stage pipeline vs 15 on the Athlons, clock for clock it dominates Athlons. :)

Thats a bit fairer ... prolly only because the AMDs had 3DNow and 3DNow+ :)

Not with the P3s :P (again with the exception of 3DNow)
