Amd llano overclocking bug

Just thought i would post about this for those like myself, who have not heard anything about it.

I found out about it, when today i tried to overclock a new system i built for my uncle which has a llano A4-3400 apu.

I first tried to use the built in msi overclock tool, which after reboot takes a while to startup, then comes up overclock failed.

I then went into the bios to do the clock manually, only to get the same result.

So googled the cpu and came across the article below, also the two links within the article are interesting as well.

I new they weren't OC able, but not about that, of course the K's are OC able, but i think they have limited multipliers that only go up like 5-10

I haven`t been back to try it yet jonny, but my understanding of that article is that they can be overclocked using the base clock but not the multiplier.

Or am i interpreting it wrong ?

I didn't see that anywhere in the article, and i think that might be locked too, not sure on that though.

Below is the part of the article, i am assuming they can be at least slightly overclocked

Note 1: that you can still overclock these chips and really have an increase in performance, but you need to overclock the base clock and not the multiplier. You can also under clock the multiplier.

Only the K models can be overclocked using the X. The others you need to use the Bus. If some boards show the X as being unlocked on the non K versions, its a bios screw up, not a problem with Llano.

The system i was working on specific spec was

msi a75ma-p35 with up to date bios and llano a4-3400 2.7 ghz

What is most confusing me about those articles is, they are saying the fault is empty overclock where by when you clock using the multiplier, the bios will read the clock is successful and show huge overclocks but it hasn`t actually happened.

But when i did it, that didn`t happen, i setup the overclock restarted the machine and it showed overclock failed ? could that be something to do with updated bios, as this board had a lot of bios updates in quite a short period.

Different boards will do it differently, but i'd love to have one of those mobos and a llano, then everyone could suck on my 9999999999999...GHz cpu

On the locked Llano, the buses are not locked. If you raise the bus it will increase all the buses. You need to get the bus over 133mhz. to get the buses back in adjustment, so it needs to be between 133 and 150mhz. But you willl need to lower the memory X.
