AMD or Intel?

Which is the better processor? a long time ago i remember when people said that amd was better now, probably not so much

And what processor would you recommend? For a average pc?
 
That's a waaay too open ended question

Are you an overclocker? Gamer? What would you be doing with this system? What's your budget?

Need a bit more information to accurately recommend a processor that isnt too slow or too fast for your needs
 
Depends on budget.
If you got less than $1300 - 1400, go for AMD.
AMD new phenom II/ Athlon II are as good as intel pentium dual-core/ C2D/ C2Q. However, since LGA775 will dead soon. there is no point to get intel LGA775 at this moment in time.

I would say AMD has improved its chips a lot. So it can easily compete with Intel. AMD chips are also use up less power, which can add up as far as savings on energy goes. They also don't need to be cooled as much because they use less power.

It's depends on what kind of programs you are running, but I'd say not they are pretty competative.
 
Um, 1400$ in which currency? if you're thinking CAD or USD, 1400 is enough in either currency to get i7, a 4890 or 275, 4GB RAM, etc.. 1000 is still enough for i7 but probably not as good, and so on, the price difference would be 100-200 difference at most, comparing a C2Q rig to a Phenom II rig and 200-300 comparing i7 to Phenom II

I mean USD. I'd assume ppl refer to USD unless they state. My estimate for a decent gaming set-up for Core i7 cost around $1300 - $1400 (with monitor/ OS)...

Most people dont buy a monitor at the same time as they upgrade, just the computer no peripherals, and OS is optional if they have a license for it already or not

I agree with 2048Megabytes, with prices like that it'd be foolish to rule out AMD entirely, they've got a lot of decent lowend/midrange offerings, they just cant compete with i7 but not everyone can afford i7
