AMD or Intel?

Building my first rig with all new parts, and I got to wondering, what is the difference between Intel and AMD? What are the advantages and disadvantages of both platforms?
Sorry to start a war here, but I had to know :P

To put it simply: Intel is in generally more expensive, but AMD is generally behind Intel in performance when it comes to each of the company's high-end chips. Intel's new 2nd gen Sandy Bridge architecture Core i3/5/7 chips are some of the best deals nowadays. They just came out a few days ago, and if you need a chip around $225, then definitely check out the Core i5 2500k. It's got an unlocked multiplier, which is necessary for overclocking the Sandy Bridge platform. The FSBs on these new CPUs are virtually un-overclockable for more than 5mhz. If you need a chip for around $320, then get the Core i7 2600k. It's 100mhz faster than the 2500k, and has hyperthreading, which will make it far more future-proof. ;):good:

AMD on the other hand is a lot less expensive-most expensive amd chip on Newegg is $270-for the Hex-core,and highest quad core is $186-everything mostly depends on what you have to spend and what you are going to do with it.

This is true, but if you compare the Phenom II X6 1100T to the Core i5 2500k, the Core i5 2500k will come out slightly ahead in terms of raw performance, and WAY ahead in core-for-core performance. When you compare the Phenom II X4 970 to similarly-priced Intel CPUs, it does prove to still be a pretty nice deal.

Ok, I think I'll get the i7 2600K. Thanks :)

hey lucas have a look at this video on youtube

Sorry, dialup :( Thanks anyway.

Yeah if you're overclocking, the new K series is absolutely mind blowing (On air anyway). They get to almost 5Ghz easy. Just make sure you get a P67 board, otherwise you can't OC.

Then you're plenty set! If you plan on getting an after market cooling (which you really should, stock Intel coolers suck :P) then you'll get past 4Ghz without a sweat, great CPU/Mobo combo :)

I have used an AMD and now i have an Intel i5.There is a big difference,Intel is running faster and is more stable. But the price is a little over AMD.

Overall,i think Intel deserve the investment.

How long ago and how much did you pay for the Core 2 Quad Q9650? It is a good processor still in my opinion but $140 over priced presently.

I got my Phenom II 940 in February 2010 for about $100 with a coupon.

Make sure to PM 87dtna about your motherboard choice. I know he had an OC block on one of the LGA1155 motherboards that he bought.

Ok, but's that only if I plan to OC it, 3.8 GHz on 4 cores is like a Ferrari compared to one of those Smart cars considering what I've been working with for the past few years ;)
