currently i have a cel 2.93ghz skt478, 1gb high density ddr ram and an gigabyte 8s648fx motherboard. i'm considering of switching to an amd, but i don't know hwo to build an amd that would have my currenty performance. it is mostly for normal pc operations.

The only thing would be diffrent would be the cpu. every thing else would be the same. amd do make cpus for that motherboard.

As long as your not playing any higher end gamers or resource aplications I suiggest a 64 bit socket 754 semperon or athlon64. You can get a motherbored/cpu combo for around 110$ for the athlon and 80$ for a sempon, i see them for that price in my local fry's electronic's add all the time. This is be a reasonable upgrade and much much MUCH better then your celeron.

Celeron's are old, and bufet crappy CPUs, the socke t 754 should be much better.

If you want to take it a step further then that too, you can get a A64 socket 939.

All you need to "build" a AMD, is the right socket motherbred and the SPU itsself, then you can use all the componets in your current PC.

No they dont. AMD's at that time(socket) are 462 pins.

you buy any of those combo, and you are ready to build your own computer.
from the top left corner, you can also choose the right socket you might want.

you might want popular nvidia chipset, well, there is one model from ati also,,,
but, "via" doesn't seem so good.

It depends on if you want to game or multitask, and your budget. If you got 400 dollars for a cpu alone then get 3800 x2. If its only for gaming any athlon 64 will be great. If its for multitasking and you dont have 400+ go with an intel p4. For either of those processors your gonna need a new mobo.

Id the only reason is the pc is to loud just get a new canse and fan.

Also do you have a agp or pci-e video card? do you plan on buying a new video card? because one of those mobo's have agp, and the other 2 have pci-e.

is that what your buying/ or wha you already have if thats what your buying, then get it as pci-e, and then make sure uyop choose a mobo with a pci-e slot.

Roughly the same way one build an intel box.

And the motherboard. He'd have a hard time fitting a AMD chip into a S478 board ;)

Budget and intention? Id shoot for a NF4Ultra if possible.

Uhhh X2-3800 is $322, the X2-4200 is $400 :)

i'm and which nvidia chipset should i choose nforce, nforce2,nforce3, nforce4?
NForce4 Ultra if possible, the nForce4 is also an option. If neither of those fit your budget, the RX200 and KT890 are good for your purposes too
