I'm trying to use AMD Overdrive to make my first attempts at over-clocking a CPU but the program is giving me a "No AMD processor detected" error. The OS and BIOS are both picking up all four core's fine, I'm using a Gigabyte GA-MA74GM-S2 mobo. Thanks.

You do know that board doesnt support the 9850, if its running it or not. Since thay dont supply a bios update to directly support that processor, that might have something to do with it.

StrangleHold was right on the money. Looked up the mobo on the manufacturer's website and turns out just about every Phenom X4 is supported except for the Phenom X4 9850 that I'm using. All is well though, its working for the time being and to make sure I don't run into future problems and to be able to use AMD OverDrive, I'm getting the right mobo that I need. Newegg's great, giving me a full refund for the first one I bought. Thanks for the help and a lesson learned and, yes, this is my first build.

try upgrading the board to what i have in my sig. im upgradign to the Phenom II 940 x4 3Ghz.

My board on newegg is on sale right now. wish i seen that before i bought it.

if im not mistaked using windows based OC programs youll have to make a profile so they laod. I read somewhere once computer is rebooted the settigns go back to stock. Its safer to deal directly with bios.

I've actually already bought the BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX3 from Newegg and it should be here Saturday. I did end up decide to try overclocking the CPU from BIOS anyways and currently have it running at 3.1 Ghz per core at 43C with the stock CPU fan and heatsink. Ran the Passmark BurnInTest with the CPU running at 50% usage for 15 minutes and didn't see it get above 54C. Not the most ideal temp, so I'm backing down to 2.8 Ghz per core until I can get a replacement heatsink/fan.
