Hey everyone ^_^

I'm thinking of making my own gaming comp cause i'm sick of the piece of crap sitting on my desk.

I've got my eye on a Gigabyte Intel X58 motherboard and i was wondering which processor to go with? I'm thinking of going with the $300 AMD Phenom Quad, perhaps overclock it in the future.

Is this a wise choice or is there a better processor i may not know of?

That motherboard will only support a new Nehalem Core i7 cpu. It is designed for Intel only and will not support AMD cpu's.

to be brutally honest, if you didnt know that you cant put an AMD cpu in an x58 board, maybe you should read up a bit before deciding to build a computer. you may end up spending a lot of time and money on something that doesnt work

I'd have to agree with him. Normally, I'm all for building your own, but if you don't know that competing CPU makers wouldn't be compatible, then you should slow down and learn first...a LOT. If you don't have the ability or time to learn, then maybe you should ask for suggestions for a complete setup, stating your total budget.

But if you do get the x58 board, no, you can't/shouldn't get an AMD. Get the lowest i7 (920), which will perform better than any existing AMD. It remains to be seen how the new line of AMD quads fare Q1 2009.

Plus, the most expensive Phenom I know if is under $200. Where are you getting your prices?

*dodges the patranising of the fellow gamers* ahhhh lol well that's why i'm coming to you guys first so i don't make a mistake as you are all pointing out i would make. :P
