Hi everyone! I bought an AMD Sempron (sdc2800dut3d) 2800+ Skt A OEM CPU for my motherboard which was a PC Chips M848A SKT A SiS746 AGP LAN 6channel audio.. (It has a sempron sticker on mobo by the way)
Anyway the CPU which has a silver coating finish with a load of pins underneath seemed to be a bit too small for the socket. Is it the wrong one?
I haven't tried fitting it yet just in case I bend the pins etc..
Anyway when I went looking for a similar CPU which was a AMD Sempron 2800+ (sda2800dut3d) Processor 256KB Cache FSB333 - OEM which was a green colour with four black round pads on(Is this the right one?)
What does the letters and numbers in brackets mean? (Noticed sda and sdc starting letters) Any info will be fantastic, thank you ;)
PS Sorry this is long and sorry all this may sound silly but I am a novice at this, especially in PC building. :o

Hi stranglehold, and many thanks for your quick reply :)
The Mobo states socket A but for some reason on the Mobo box it says support 462 AMD sempron. Is this the right one? or is it the other one I have mentioned? and if so what is the correct way of fitting this? thanks again ;)

If the model numbers are right, either one will fit, just different cores, one brown and one green.
SDC- thorton core
SDA- thoroughbred core

Does the CPU have to fill the whole socket or can you leave some holes showing?

The link I gave you shows what it should look like installed

Should not have any holes showing, you might have a 754 processor and a 462 board or the other way around

thank you stranglehold, I really appreciate that mate!
The first CPU I described in my first post looked smaller in the socket as I had mentioned it was a smooth silver finish on one side and full of gold pins on the other where as the second CPU I mentioned is in the pic from the link you sent me, albeit a green colour instead of brown and it looks like it fits the whole socket.

If you have this then it won't fit your current mobo:

You are looking for something like this to fit your current Socket A (462-pin) mobo:

Throughbred core:

Thorton core:

thanks guys, you are ALL life savers! I will sell my silver finish CPU and purchase one of the other type CPUs,(the green or brown padded ones for my socket A motherboard)
I have just done some research into the silver finish CPU I had purchased at the start of the thread... the AMD Sempron (sdc2800dut3d) 2800+ Skt A OEM (which had the 'pic' and the word 'Socket A' of the silver finish CPU from the company I purchased it from)
And according to the research that I had found it stated that the green/brown padded Sempron CPUs were Socket A, and the silver finish Sempron CPUs were socket 754. Is this true? thanks again,U.K.MAN

Yes the ones wth covers are 754 and 939s,well the older AMD K6-2 and IIIs had covers, they fit a socket 7
