Will a Sempron perform well when it comes to gaming? I found a few desktop barebones with Semprons in them but I'm not familiar with them.

heya

Semprons are basically budget CPUs. However, that does not mean that their performance is poor in any way. You are most probably referring to Socket 754 Semprons which are basically weaker versions of the Athlon 64. The newest even have 64bit capabilities. Therefore depending on the model you are reffering to, the gaming performance should be sufficient.

Heya

Hunt for those Seprons (64bit) that have 256KB cache. They should do better. However, I am sure that the one you have listed is very decent and will make you happy with its performance.

The only thing you have to worry about when you buy a Seprons in barebone systems is that alot of times they come permantly attached to a low quality board so you can't upgrade. If your careful you'll be fine and beable to play many games with the Seprons, just watch out for the low bugit barebone systems...

You have never heard of that? Some cheap boards will pernatly attach a Seprons to it. My friend is a reseller and a couple years ago and he used to sell them in barebone cases.

any links, i heard of them for via chips and a few other exotics, but never for amd.

Well

Although I have suggested a higher cached Sempron, I would think that nevertheless the 3000+ would outperform the 2800+ with a higher cache. You could reach out for a AMD Sempron 64 3100+ which has 256KB cache but the performance difference between that and the 3000+ is not big.

i was playing around with my old sempron 3100 earlier and managed to get it overclocked to 2.4 GHz, taking the Vcore to 1.5 volts. it ran at about 53 degrees celcius full load on the stock air cooler. if you're looking for performance from this platform, there is no reason why overclocking cant boost that performance to acceptable levels.

just got a sempron 2800+, excellent at gaming!! I have 1GB Corsair ValueSelect and an ATI 9600XT 256MB, runs halo at full settings and 1280x1024 resolution with no lag! Got a score of 3755 on 3DMark03. Which is 200-300 points higher then my P4 3Ghz with the same specs. Deffinetly good for gaming... dont know how amazing an Athlon 64 is though. lol

Ive got an Athlon 64 (3000+) i dont play games but it is a really good cpu.. It runs so much at the same time, alot of my friends say they cant have other programs open when they are burning DVDs lol I do video conversion while burning dvds..
