I am going to buy a AMD X2 4800+ Socket 939 tonight and I was wondering if it is pretty much a plug and play type deal.

I read the How to but I don't want to reinstall windows, is this necessary?

I have read around and all I pretty much have to do is update my BIOS, shut down, put in the new processor and boot up? Correct?

Any hel pis appreciated.

I don't know if you just skipped over it, but I'd probably go ahead and restart after doing the bios flash just to make sure that that goes smoothly. If there were a problem with the flash and you install the cpu - if nothing happens you've got more troubleshooting to deal with. Otherwise, if you flash, restart, and its fine, then you can continue with shut down, swap chips, restart and know that you only changed one variable.

In all likely hood, you're fine doing it the way you posted...but I hate to risk having to waste an hour or two figuring out a problem.

The only trouble you might run into is that your motherboard doest support the 4800+.. in that case you would have to flask the bios, and then you should be able to just pop it in, and it should work.
( your motherboard might already support it tough... so just try it first :) )

As far as I know that board will run your processor with out a bios update, it supports X2 processors, the only processor bios update is for the FX60!

then i would suggest installing the bios update if you intend on overclocking. because without that update, you will probably not be able to get the X2 past 2.4 GHz (at least, i had that with my old motherboard wich didnt support the FX60 :( but it was a different brand and model)
but if you're not planning on overclocking it,.. stay away from bios flashing :)

btw, thanks for the heads up StrangleHold

I am not overclocking because I don't need to, and if I wanted to I would have my IT friend do it for me.
