Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

It's only for a specific phone, each phone needs it's own version of the OS. Not all phones will be getting ICS either.

Oh. But quite a lot of GingerBread phones will be getting ICS, I saw a compatibility list, but couldn't find it now.

Why since Dell has released the update for 3.0 for there tablet (mom has one), I have not tried 4.0 personally but I do watch a lot of cnet tv and from what I have seen on there seems very cool, only issue I see is they got rid Mass storage and I cannot remember the reason, it has something to do with partitioning the flash memory but either way that was a feature I like cause no matter what OS you had it could work with your music, video and pictures.
 
Well there are people like the CyanogenMod Team working on CyanogenMod9 which is ICS for ARMv6 Socket phones.
and the Wildfire has a port half working, the GT540 optimus also has a port half working.

but not every phone will get official updates, due to "chipset faults" or just because the manufacturers are lazy and wont make the ROM work for the device, but thats why we have Developers :)

Compatible, yes. But many manufacturers are not wasting there time in developing ICS for phones they no longer make.
 
A majority of Android phones are single core cpu's which I m almost sure will not be compatiable with ICS nore would I want to see it that way being 2.3.5 is noticably heavier then 2.2.1 so I would not want to see ICS 4.x.x run on a single core phone.

My Thunderbolt is only a single core but will be getting ICS.

well its runnin on the NS, SGS, GT540 and Wildfire, and the wildfire hasnt got a GPU for the hardware accel. and still has little lagg

I have the Inspire 4G, the twin of the Desire hd. And I can tell you, if you know how to rom your phone you can have ICS right /now/.

Its unofficial development at the moment and in beta with a few features missing, but its available to download and install.

If you want something not in beta, you'll have to wait. Reports claim that January the Inspire 4G will get CM9 based on ICS. So I imagine the Desire HD will come that time too.

EDIT: If you were wanting something official from HTC/the manufacturer. Then yeah, it probably won't happen. All the more reason to rom!

Actually Mass Storage is just not on the Galaxy Nexus due to lack of external storage. Android 4.0 still supports it.

ICS will be available for single core phones, and it won't be as slow as you seem to think. In fact the OP is using it on his single core phone, and he seems to be happy with it.

From what I read many future Android phones are going to follow in using a single volume for storage.
 
I realized Android 4.0 is more resource efficient compared to gingerbread and also its interface is to put it simply tasty.
There is an inbuilt network data manager and you can take screenshots.
Then there is also a better keyboard, I mean there are two levels of spell check once while you are typing ie auto complete and once you are done there is a drop down menu next to the word to correct the spelling.
And as Kobaj pointed it out you can install it un-officially also, and then there is something in between what I chose, like I wasn't offered an Update from Google, I just took the .zip file renamed it and updated it through my boot loader recovery. And the very next day I read an article in the Indian newspaper how Google stopped distributing updates for ICS for Nexus S and is planning to wait for the reviews from the people who were given an update.

I could have updated using the un official method before but I would have had to back up all my apps and messages.
It runs just fine on a single core processors, but the only sad part is there is no Face Unlock on my phone like the Galaxy Nexus.

BTW how awesome is the galaxy Nexus. I mean checkout the resolution on that phone.Did any one get a Galaxy nexus?

And this has something to do with ICS how? It's to due with the trend of putting in 32 or so gb of internal memory and forgoing the sd card slot, which completely changes the partitioning. I doubt all phones will do that, as it raises costs.
