Android Contacts

Just got my first smartphone and have a question about adding contacts. I have the choice of either adding it to the phone, or gmail account. Is one better than the other? Can contacts on the phone be transferred to a microSD card and saved there?

Im not a tech on this subject and always confused also. They installed had me set up a gmail account. What do i use it for? Don't know why but curious. I have a att email account. Works fine. BUT i get all the email and have to delete manually with the cell phone. Not a problem.
Its a 4G android.

Always select google so that it automatically syncs with your acccount. If you don't and you have to reset your phone, then you won't have the contact to sync back to your phone when you reload all your contacts.

Im listening JohnB also. Don't have a clue what your talking about. Its over my head.

When you go to add contacts to your android smartphone, it should ask you if you want them saved to your phone or your gmail. If you save it to your phone then it won't automatically sync to your gmail account unless you sync it manually. When you choose gmail, the contact will be stored on both your phone and gmail account automatically. If you aren't getting the popup when saving your contact then you must not have that option on your phone.

Thanks for the advice. I logged into Gmail and just typed everything in that way. By the time I finished one and started on the next, the previous one was already auto-synced to my phone. These smarty-type phones are pretty nice. Not sure if Sprint has the nightly auto-backup feature Verizon did, so this way I know I'm playing it safe. Thanks again:)

BTW - any cool Apps I should take a look at? So far I'm rocking WWF, AB, and Pandora.

Where's My Droid is great for when you lose your phone. You can text it from another phone and it will ring until you find it. With another text command you can also turn the GPS on and locate it on a map. Highly recommend it :good:

Angry Birds is a must! Didn't play it until I got my Inspire 4G.

The Amazon App Store has a free app every day, so install the app store to keep an eye out for a good deal on a good app :good:

Google Sky Map shows the stars and planets and allows you to move the phone around and locate what you're looking for. Useful for when using telescopes and you can't completely identify something.

gPad is like a touchpad on your phone for your computer. Got a computer hooked up to a TV but no wireless mouse and keyboard? That's your solution! Works off WiFi or Bluetooth. Just install a small server software (from their website) on the host computer and connect! I use it on my HTPC.

If you find text messages are coming in with wrong times and skewing the conversation, SMS Time Fix is a good app to fix that.

SwiftKey X is an amazing keyboard that has good spell correction and a good word prediction. Download the trial and see if you like it.

I recommend setting up a Google Voice account if you don't already have one. Works good for voicemail as it can transcribe the message and save a recording for you.

Wiggle Wifi Wardrive is a cool app that scans wireless networks in range and logs them onto a spreadsheet. Take a look into that - it's an interesting "hobby". You can find one of my spreadsheets (HERE) as an example.

Travis, WMD looks cool - going to have to try that out. I'll keep an eye on Amazon too and see what they have. Swype is almost 100% dead-accurate for me so not sure about SwiftKey, and I set up a GV account a week or two ago - haven't had a chance to play with it yet.

GV is awesome. I don't ever have to pay for a texting plan. :D When it comes to keyboards, I just use the stock Gingerbread keyboard, which I have found to be pretty much the best out there. I have a Droid 2, which comes with a non-standard software keyboard, so I just downloaded it from the market. When it comes to syncing contacts, I've found the Google account synchronization to be very useful. I reset my phone to the stock base file a few weeks ago in order to upgrade to a new ROM, so it was useful that all my contacts were automatically synchronized.

The contact sync featur is nice, mine is with Facebook and my wifes is through gmail and everytime we set up a phone contacts auto matically there.

Store it to Google, the best thing about Android is everything is backed up - Contacts, apps, settings, photos, etc.

personally i believe better use Google contacts, because of it always sync after you buy new phone no need to manually move contacts, just sing-in everything sync.
