annoying effing popups

heya CFers, my girlfriend's PC is kinda messed up...her grandfather used to check out porn on this thing before it got moved into her room, which caused embedded popups. i already deleted everything i saw in HijackThis that was questionable, and i already tried SDFix, which reported me with the error that i had messed up files on the HD. no problem, just run a chkdsk, right? wrong.
i tried running chkdsk and got the error "cannot open volume for direct access."

ive already spent a fair amount of time googling for it, but i keep getting solutions something along the lines of "uninstall spyware doctor" which she doesnt have.

in conclusion, WTF?
 
Hello!
Only some Trojans can make that symptoms. I understand you used SDFix...did you use it in safe mode?
Also, using it and fixing in HijackThis isn't always enough as far as I'm aware.
Sometimes we need to delete the files from the computer.
OK, I'd like to see your log if I may.

Hijackthis is a program used by anty-malware people to see what's on the computer. Instead of scanning the computers for files, you get a report of everything that's on the computer (places that usually are infected).

jimkonow please post a fresh HJT log here and we'll take care of it :).

PS: GameMaster, SDFix doesn't work in normal mode :P

Please don't interrupt this way! If you want to learn something you can easily go to some websites and forums that teach you how to fight Malwares and all about the tools to do the same.
If you have any particual questions, I think you should open a new thread.

You're running an outdated HijackThis verison. It's not that important I guess...
  1. Right-click on the clock in your taskbar and choose Task Manager
  2. Click on the Processes tab and search for VIEWMGR.EXE, if its found, click on it and then click End Task to close
  3. Click on Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs
  4. Uninstall any of the following programs associated with Viewpoint:
    • Viewpoint Manager
    • Viewpoint Media Player
    • Viewpoint Toolbar
  5. Close the Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel and restart the computer.

Next, open up a Hijack This and choose Do a system scan only.
Tick these entries if found:

OK, at least the log is clean.
I suspect of Smitfraud infection as it's not visible in the log. Also, when you are infected with Smitfraud you get some poup ups wanting you to download some items which surely infects you.
There is a new case with Smitfrauds, harder to remove but I will just go on and try the simpliest first.
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
