Another 1gig stick? or 512 stick or what?

so from my revious rig i have a 1 gig stick of PQI turbo ram. i dont remember the exact timings but they are easily accessable at newegg or anywhere. I also have a 512 stick of basically the same ram, instead of the "turbo" its just the value bottom of the line stuff i bought just to get my rig running.

i just bought a new DFI ultra d expert, a 3800 X2, 7900gt.....

when i hooked all this system up i tried running the 1 gig stick in slot 1, then the 512 stick in slock 3. well system wouldnt boot. so i took the 512 stick out and it boots fine.

my question is this. Should i buy another 1 gig stick the same as the one i have? or should i buy another 512 the same, or should i get all new ram? i see alot of people usually tend to have 2x512 rather then 2x1gig. tell me why.

ohyea i plan on doin quite a bit of overclocking.....:D

You obviously mixed two different types together for the board to fail to boot. Or the board you received was defective. The size difference wouldn't stop a board from working. But if your runs strictly on single sided, which none of the newer Socket 939 do, the addition of a dual sided would stall the system. In many the vendor would immediately say the bios has to be updated.

The real problem may be that you didn't plug the four wire 12v plug in near the cpu socket or the supply wasn't equipped with it. Without that plugged in the power feed to the newer line of cpus isn't there the system will fail to boot. Look over all connections and make sure nothing but the ground on the board is touching the mounts. If everything is found connected properly and no exposed areas are touching ground you may have a bad board or even a bad cpu.

i think it's because of the different type of RAM i had the same problem with 3 256 sticks and when i removed the odd one the system worked fine

The two different memory types would clash right away. You can be sure of that being the more likely cause since the Value or budget low cost type is usually a single sided while the next step and performance dimms are dual. The best move to increase memory is to buy a second 1gb dimm by the same brand as well as same model to see the best performance.

Thanks for the responses but pc eye is the only one who really answered my question. i know why it didnt boot i was simply asking what ram i should buy to compliment what i already have. i originally thought i should get another 1gig stick of what i have but i just noticed recently that alot of overclockers use 2x 512 instead of 1 gig sticks. Maybe that was just because of cost i dont know but ill be going 2x1gig.

thanks all

You will find that performance will improve on large apps as well as gaming and having the dual channel mode enabled. With larger dimms you won't see memory holes when one dimm fills to capacty and overflows to the next dimm which is on a secondary channel. When swapping out two 512s for a pair of 1gb dimms the change made a big diference on some newer games here. Ley us know how it works out for you.

thanks for all the help pc eye, any question i have asked you have given the best answer. thanks a million. i am going to have to wait a while until i get more ram. the new psu and case are higher on the priority list than more ram. plus i havent even got this system up and running yet. im running into all sorts of problems

Well if you get stuck on something we can try to help you through it. If you are after a higher end build you will certainly want a good supply in there. Have a look at a few models provided by different brands with the links here.
