Another basic OS question

How do I change the number of windows I need to have open before windows condenses it into 1? Right now its at like 4 which is really annoying, and then when I close other ones it still doesnt go back.

right click on your taskbar and uncheck "group similar taskbar items" or something like that

Windows will only condense similar windows into one group when it runs out of space. If it doesn't ungroup them afterwards, it's because Windows feels it doesn't have enough space to do so. You can't change the precise number, but do what suprasteve suggests to disable the grouping.
