Another Internet Connection Query

Sorry to bombard each and all with my problems but I need your help again!

I have my Internet with AOL and am using the router they supplied a DSL 2640R.

As my computer is static in the office upstairs I have it wired as opposed to wireless. However when I want to use the lap top downstairs I presumed, obviously wrongly, that I would just need to turn on the power to the router to get wireless downstairs. This however is not the case and I have to turn the upstairs PC on and log in before the lap top will connect to the internet thus having two computers on whilst only wanting to use the lap top.

Is this because I have stayed wired on the first computer?

Becker.

You will have to excuse my ignorance of these things but the modem I was using is now sitting next to the record player, gathering dust, not connected to anything. I thought that was the idea of a router that it displaced the modem.

The router has one cable connected to the phone line and the other into the computer.

Have I done it wrong then?

Becker.

well my grandma's new modem is also a router but when you turn off her computer you can still have wireless :/

all modern routers have a modem included.

It goes:

Wall socket > Spiltter/Filter > Phone/Router > Computer
