Another Limited or no connectivity thread

I'll try to give you guys as much information as possible, but I will admit I am some what of a novice when it comes to network problems.

So, I moved into this new apartment two weeks ago, and we are waiting on Direct TV for cable and satellite internet. Until then, our landlord said we could use her wireless internet. So my two roommates both have laptops and are able to connect fine and browse the internet etc. I have a desktop and I am also able to connect to the network, signal strength varies but often shows "Excellent". The Network status shows I am sending but not receiving packets and I am showing a 169.254.xxx.xxx IP, which I know isn't right. I am unable to go online or on instant messenger or anything like that. I have searched the internet and these forums, I've tried various things, including cmd prompts, reseting the IP, the repair tool, reconnecting to the network, restarting the comp, etc. I am just a loss to what the problem is.

I uninstalled Norton's thinking it may be the firewall (it was expired anyways) but that did nothing. I brought my friends laptop into my room to see if where I was at had a bad connection, but he still gets internet fine. The hardware I'm using is a Ralink Wireless card that has worked on other networks back at home just fine. I have Windows XP, and all drivers as far as I know are up to date. At this point I am just looking for additional things to try. Thanks a lot

so your friend can connect to the same WAP and get on the internet and you cant? Try uninstalling and reinstalling your nic... make sure you dont have a static address although doesn't seem you do because you have a 169.254.x.x address which means its most likely looking for a DHCP server and couldn't fine one. If uninstall/reinstall doesn't work you may want to try reinstalling your TCP/IP stack it could be jacked up.
