Anti-Virus for a Mac

Ok, so some of my family bought 2 $2500 mac's over the weekend (ugh). But they dont have anti-virus for them yet. They were told, by the store clerk that they dont need it. Bull.

I dont believe in running any computer without anti-virus regardless of how "secure" it supposedly is. I know that macs tend to have very few threats directed at them, but bad stuff is still out there. And to top it off, most of my family know squat about computers. It took 2 weeks for my mother to understand where the power button is. God its painful being related to people who are so stupid!

So what would you recommend? I want something that is: self-updating, easy to use, an all-in-one, NOT BY NORTON, dependable, well known, and price is no object.

I use trend micro on my pc and AVG free on the fiancees pc. But I've never had to mess with a mac, and I never want to! But they dont know what to use for anti-virus. And trust me, if there is a virus out there for a mac...they are gonna find it!

So let the recommendations fly!!!

no

My family has money. But they spend it on the STUPIDEST stuff!

They spent 5000 for 2 new BIG macs, and they still have two Dells that work fine. I cant understand it. Oh and they just bought an LCD flat screen, and a xbox 360 AND they are about to buy a new car.

Frivolous, impulsive spending. That's all I'm gonna say.

And no, I don't live like that.

thats a problem id like to be around, tell them mtb211 needs a mactop, try that link out.. think that might work out

I wish

Hey they arent throwing me money, I'm a college pauper! I wish they would toss me some cash, then I could stop eating 2 frozen burritos every day!

I'll check out teh link.

Actually, no.

She birthed you...try showing a bit of respect. But since we're on the subject of computer-illiteracy, I refer you back to

Finding it is one thing; having it successfully installed and doing it's virus-thing is totally different. Unix-based systems don't work like Windows - it's not as simple as 'virus comes along, virus installs itself, fire and brimstone/dogs and cats living together'. Unless you get into the programming depths and basically help it install itself, nothing to worry about. In fact, pretty much the only need to have AV on a Mac is if you share files with Windows-based systems, and even then, it's to protect *them*, not you.

Anyway, love the tag-line on the linked page "The best antivirus for Macintosh: protects your Mac from all known Mac viruses and malware" Yeah...all seven or eight of them.

well.....

Ugh comeon, I wouldn't be a jerk to my mother, except that her and my dad are about to get a divorce. And she is trying very hard to spend as much money as possible before that. She is working to wreck my dad, and he is moving too slowly in the filing.

She is a crazy, much like what Christopher Titus said about his mother "...My mom is crazy. No not like ohh silly my mom is crazy ha ha ha..... No. My mom is cRazY as in We the jury find the defendant...."

My mom is crazy like that.

Anyway,
I am looking into this mac antivirus stuff for my grandmother and her computer. She is 82 and loves computers, texting, playing on Facebook, digital cameras, etc.... And I am trying to keep her $2500 computer safe. And yes she will be getting files from lots of other people. She is also an accountant, so a high level of safety/preparedness.... yeah, its kinda important for her.

You can say all you want that anti-virus is not needed. But if you just dropped $2500 on a brand new computer, wouldn't you want anti-virus? I would.

So, antivirus suggestions for a mac?
