Antivirus 2009 and now XP Validation Problem

I had a friend call me saying he had conflicting AV programs. I checked his pc and he had the spyware "Antivirus 2009". I gave him AVG Anti-virus and Spyware Terminator which got rid of the Antivirus 2009 problem. Now, his computer gives him a bubble saying "you may be the victim of software counterfitting" and wants him to validate his copy of Windows XP. I try to go through the steps but I get an error saying I don't have Active X installed and to click the drop down bubble and install it, problem is there is no bubble to install it. Is this a problem caused by the Antivirus 2009 spyware or what?

Right down the bottom of the screen is the following "If the ActiveX Control does not properly install, you may click the Validate Now button below to launch the alternate validation process (optimized for browsers unable to run the original validation script)". Click on the Validate Now button underneath that and see if that works. Alternatively, you can download and install Firefox and try validating with that - there's a non-ActiveX plugin available for firefox to validate.

Also, please see http://www.computerforum.com/131398-important-please-read-before-posting.html and post the requested logs so that we may accurately identify and remove any remnants of the infection.
