Antivirus help

I am thinking about switching over to Linux and decided to use Ubuntu.

I had bad luck with AVG in teh past and do not want to go that route. what do I do about virus software? I have never used Linux before. I think I am going to try it out on an older (2-3 years) laptop first to see how I like it.

You don't need antivirus when running Linux. You're not likely to encounter things that will attack you like the bombardment of attacks against Windows users.

I am a frequenter of places that I am sure have some viruses floating around. If Avast works for Linux Ill try it. So the viruses that attack Windows won't mess with Linux huh? Seems like even more of a reason to switch lol!

They won't work the same because they're written and coded for use in a Windows environment (as an executable or process). Linux doesn't read that code, which is why you can't run Windows applications inside Linux (unless you use an emulator such as Wine).
