Antivirus please

Why do you guys keep saying AVG is free? I went to their website at grisoft and I can't find any free versions. They're all trial. I need Firewall protection

You had to check their free site, not commercial. AVG free doesn't offer firewall protection but there are plenty of free alternatives, Comodo, Zonealarm, Sygate, etc..

I'm using AVG and Avast on my Vista machines and AntiVir on my XP computers. I like AntiVir better but it wouldn't ever run in Vista dont know if they ever updated it for Vista or not.

A while back they did, yeah. Full Vista support.

Kaspersky is the best. I've used NOD32, Norton, Bit Defender, and PC Cillin and a few others. Kaspersky is definitely the best there is. They also have the Best Forum going which has great knowledgeable support. Try it for 30 days Free http://kaspersky.com http://forum.kaspersky.com P.S. Make sure that you get ALL of the Eset Security out of your computer before installing Kaspersky.

I just noticed that Windows XP has "Windows Firewall". Does this mean I don't need another firewall program?

Windows XP firewall is not very good. Download either the free version of Online Armor or the free Comodo 3.0. Yes, they are free but they also have the higest ratings for a software firewall over everybody else and that includes all paid versions.

Don't forget to disable the XP firewall before installing another firewall.

And what about if I have an external DSL modem: its specifications say it has firewall. Does this mean I have firewall, via my DSL modem? .....

There are hardware firewalls and software firewalls. My router comes with a hardware firewall but I also use a software firewall. There are those that contend that if you have a hardware firewall you don't need a software one. Others argue for them.

Personally, I like the layered method, i.e., different security measures by different vendors meaning my anti-virus is NOD32, anti-malware/spyware is SUPERAntispyware, and my current firewall is is Sunbelt's free version which I will soon jettison and get a different one, and a router.

Windows XP is a software firewall, and like I said, is not really that good.

I go the solitary router firewall method. I don't stack because I've never liked the "in your face" nosiness of software derivatives, but stacking or layering a hardware and software firewall is supposed to provide the best possible protection. Software firewalls provide both the added outbound scanning, and frontend email protection, so you might be able to see how they can be of benefit next to a hardware.

Pretty much what slacker said, so I'm agreeing not spamming :D

Okay. Well I think I'll just let the DSL Modem be my firewall because Comodo is pretty damn nosey and lagging my not-so-new AMD ...

Antivirus is more important than the firewall anyway, although I personally would never go without either.

I use Avast and ZoneAlarm firewall together and have been very pleased with both.
