I have a brand new HP computer system that has been basically taken over. I cannot do anything on it. Anytime I try to do anything it tells me the associated file is infected. Including malwarebytes; "Application cannot be executed. The file consent.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now?"

I get this "error" anytime I try to start or run a program. I know its called "antivirus soft". Now, how do I get rid of it? I would apreciate someones help with this a great deal! Thank you

Can I connect the Hard drive from my PC to my laptop as an external and run a scan on it that way? I have the cable to do it, but I don't want to take the chance of infecting my laptop. I did this with another guys computer to get rid of the infections in his. Thanks again!

What happens when you boot to safe mode? If you can get there then run this program. You will most likely have to download this file onto a usb flash drive and transfer it to the infected computer and run it.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

combofix problem;
Error - win32 only

! Incompatible O/S. Combofix only works for workstations with Windows 2000 and XP

I am running Windows Vista on the infected machine.

A fresh HiJackThis log

What is HiJackThis?

Hello, please download and post a log with HiJackThis.

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

In order to run allegedly infected programs (Malwarebytes Antimalware) you'll have to end malicious process that is being run by ANTIVIRUS SOFT (explanation here: rogue threat - antivirus soft)

Antivirus Software

Everyone has a favorite antivirus product, but I have one I hate the least. Kaspersky seems to work better than the other ones I've used.

  • Norton seems to be a victim of it's own popularity and viruses seem to be written specially to defeat it. it also doesn't like you to uninstall it.
  • Bit Defender is a joke. It endlessly stops and asks you to agree to almost every decision, presumably so that you can take all the blame for whatever goes wrong.
  • Bit Defender also has the infuriating habit of telling you that it found several viruses, but "no action is possible" and sends you to a webpage which discusses the problem in vague generalities.
  • I haven't really trusted MacAfee since they promoted the dangers of the dreaded Michaelangelo virus and offered the best sure cure for it (for a price). I also don't like to give in to a program that comes bundled with the computer and requires the 12 labors of Hercules to remove it.
  • AVG seems to work, but it doesn't tell you much about what it does.
  • Kaspersky seems to do a good job, but one day it said it detected "key-logger like activities." Hmm, that's interesting to note, but what can you do about it?
