Any advantages to PCI EX x16?

Hi,

I just builta new computer, for now im using the built in graphics, since i wasnt really into games. But, ive downloaded some demos, and i think im gonna buy a few. On COD, at parts where there are a bunch of explosions going off at once, my screen gets really choppy. Im figuring this is b/c of the graphics. But anyway, i have a PCI Expressx16 slot, not AGP. Is there any advantages to PCI EX, is it faster?

The PCIe has a higher bandwidth than AGP, but the cards that are out today don't use the full bandwidth of AGP 8X (from what I've seen they really aren't limited on AGP 4X). So basically buying a PCIe graphics card today is no different than buying an AGP card. Only when faster graphics cards come out will it really be advantageous to have PCIe
 
im not sure about this but pci-e 16x has 3x higher bandwidth than agp remember im not really sure

i think tht pci-e cards are cheaper than agp...just sayin cuz i saw some cards on newegg tht the pci-e is cheaper than agp

Not sure so I could not say a whole lot but perhaps those pci-e cards you saw just happened to be lower end cards then the agp cards you saw? I would think that they'd be a little bit more expensive if not at all because of the new tech. put into them. perhaps you saw pci cards and not pci express?

Anyhow it just sounds strange to me if that's the case but as I've said I only question that because it makes little sense but I haven't even checked it out so I could not really say.

Not looked at New Egg myself yet, but prob because the geforce 6XXX series are native PCI-E GPU's whereas the 5XXX series were native AGP GPU's. Therefore Nvidia had to stick an extra chip on the 6XXX series card to convert them back to AGP, thus making the AGP version slightly more expensive than the PCI-E versions. ATI haven't sussed doing that yet, thus the reason there are no Radeon X series available as AGP cards......yet.
 
PCIe performance

There are no apps at the moment that make use of the full PCIe bandwidth of the graphics interface. But you do get benefits of PCIe in other peripherals such as Gigabit ethernet cards.

Thanks to ATI adopting uberstupid naming conventions, there is a distinction between X800 (the series), X800Pro (the card) and X800 (the card).

Radeon X800 R430 12pipes 400/350
Radeon X800 Pro R423 12pipes 475/450
Unless im horribly mistaken the X800 is only available in PCIe

I would argue that the x800Pro is an x800 series card :P
 
I would too hehe (and indeed i did know what you meant), just odd that ATi would choose that kinda naming system. I guess nVidia had their phuckup with the 5500-5700 and 59xx
