Any good free software for recording video?

What I'm looking for is a program that literally records everything on my computer screen and turns it a video file such as an avi. For example: if I'm playing a video clip, it would capture the clip. I once had a similar program that stopped and started recording with the simple press of a hotkey.

The reason I want such a program is because I only want to capture a few minutes of a 60 minute DVD. Ideally I'd also like capture sound as well as video.

Problem solved. I used a program called autogordianknot to convert the DVD to an avi file. Then I used windows movie maker to isolate the clip I wanted.
