I have a friend whose computer is "running hot". The cable that connect the monitor to the vid card. I'm thinking one of the two is going bad. It's all original except for changing the window xp from home to pro. Any ideas of which it might be? Am I missing something? It's a 5 year old HP not sure the exact specs on it.

So the computer, or the cable is hot? It's hard to read your question, could you please say clearly what your problem is.

The metal used in the cable is a bad/in-efficient conductor....

bad conductivity = electrical resistance = heat
(This is why you get burned when you are struck by lightning; humans are bad conductors....)

The potential risk is that the heat could melt the insulation between the wires and cause a short which would probably damage the monitor.

Edit: My guess would be that it's the power cord for the monitor of which is probably going bad..... Hopefully, it's a common cord that you can place; like the power cord for the PSU.........
