Hey

I bought a xfx 6600, the first one I got overheated alot and was faulty so I got another one for free. My problem is:

I have the graphics card all hooked up properly. It was running perfectly, but I had a problem where I got an error message from dr watson which kept refreshing windows, I assumed windows was faulty and put my windows xp cd in and hit repair which deleted all the xp files and re installed each one, I put SP2 back on and all my drivers including my graphics card drivers. Now when I try to view a video my CPU usage shoots up to 100% and it goes really slow, if I hit the x to close wmplayer it still goes slow until I end process in task manager. It says Connecting in the media player but just sits there. I had this problem before with my graphics card but remember I fixed it somehow, I think i hit install home theatre package drivers but ive tried and still no luck.

Has anyone got suggestions because Ive tried installing all the updates from microsoft and all my drivers. What could be causing this?

Try a diffrerent program to play your video's, such as winamp.. Its free h**p://www.winamp.com/ If your Cpu doesnt shoot and your video plays you know its something to do with windows media player :-)

P.S i had a XFX 6600 and it never played up once.. as long as your video drivers are installed properly you should be right.. but u never know its possible you have another faulty one :-|

Oh also what file type is it your trying to play? becuase i have heard of funny things like that happening to windows media player when your trying to play a file that is copy protected or a file WMP does not support.

I have tried vlc media player and it plays the audio and no video, but also slows the computer down. I will try winamp.

I doubt its another faulty one because it was working properly until I reinstalled windows and something got uninstalled.

Mmmm it definatly sounds like a software issue, maybe you OS or something else to do with drivers. So what file type is it your trying to play?

Any video file types on my hard drive I can't play in any, however winamp and vlc plays the audio but no video shows and the computer pauses and slows down lots, but windows media player doesnt play anything.

I can play videos from youtube and google video though.

You could try installing a codec pack, maybe you dont have the required codec to play those files? You can get a free all in one codec pack here h**p://www.free-codecs.com/download_soft.php?d=1716&s=67

If this doesnt work then im not sure.. Can you play dvds in your optical drive in your PC (assuming you have a dvd-rom) ?
