any way to avoid restart?

Windows restarts because data has built up inside the operating system, which is in use, and can't be removed. When it restarts, all this data is removed, and the computer seems refreshed (less laggy etc). I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say you tried clearing the memory via a shortcut, but I can't see how that would help, only destabilize the system. If your computer is not internet connected, you can disable updates and leave it on for weeks at a time, but maybe you have some dodgy RAM or another hardware related problem somewhere. How old is your computer and where did you get it from/who makes it?

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that's right, but if not, someone, feel free to correct me here.

when leaving the computer on for many days it will require a restart or else it won't function properly. for instance opening folders:

Its because MS programmed windows badly. Windows are created in explorer using an object orientated model. Each window is a new instance of the class window, but thier garbage collection is faulty, so when the object is destroyed, its memory space isnt reallocated. Modern versions of windows suffer much less from this as there is improved garbage collection.

you've been having this since windows 95? so i'm guessing you've had this on several different pc's. if that's the case, do you do anything strange to it? i mean use settings normal people don't even have a clue about?
my pc stays on day and night for weeks at a time. But i've never seen this (xp and vista).

its more a 9x problem than an NT one, although it existed in versions of NT4 which did not have the Desktop Update installed (maybe because they used the same shell as windows 95?)

I don't really see what the problem is. I thought you had been having this problem since '95, meaning with all versions since then. I am running XP at the moment, on a computer I plan to use as a private game server. I've been testing it for about 5 weeks now, and it hasn't cut out once. There's about 2GB of new player data, 3 running servers (ones a tiny web server, to host score tables), and nothing much seems to have changed. Was going to migrate it to Vista, but XP is still strong!

If you're still using the 95 and 98 (and 98SE), and 2000/ME versions of Windows, I'm not surprised, but from what you posted, it sounded like XP and Vista too (well, maybe - but unlikely).

Get linux instead... windows is made for beginner users (at least that was with windows 1,2,3, 9x, Me) and usually they don't need to keep a pc awake for more than 24 hours. That is why if you keep windows awake for 48h+ it works like crazy.
Many servers use linux and that's why they (websites, your ISP etc) never 'go to sleep' crashing your connection.

I have Debian on the machine for dual boot with Apache - however, it can't run the game servers because they are windows games. In my opinion, Linux can be more stable than windows, but it's useless. All you can really put on it is what you get with it, a few updates and OpenOffice. No games, nothing you can customize yourself. Shame, but not bad for a free OS.

Huh? You can install any linux apps on it, there are thousands out there. And what do you mean nothing you can customize yourself? I found Linux more flexible than Windows as fas as any "customization" was concerned...

i agree with the lack of decent commercial games
They do have heaps open source ones, some of them are actually really good ones (considering they're free), such as Glest or Warzone 2100, and the Quake-like games for Linux are actually pretty cool too :P Oh and Battle for Wesnoth absolutely rules!

But the lack of games for Linux still ticks me off as well...

Thats not what I mean. You can't set it up with exactly what you want on it. I know there are thousands of programs out there for Linux, but what I mean, is there are pretty much none (that I have found), for what I use the computer for.

Anyone else seen any video editing or 3D modelling applications for Linux, like Adobe Premiere CS3 or After Effects CS3 and 3DS Max? I haven't found anything even remotely similar. Basically, Linux is a cheap home alternative to Windows, if you only browse the web, write letters and send email (in my opinion, I know people's differ).

This still happens to you even on XP? Thats weird.

Do you have any anti-virus and anti-ad/spyware on your comp? Sounds like something is running your resources up throughout the day until your system cant take it anymore.

If I were you, id back up all of your important pictures, mp3s, and important small stuff like that to dvds, then do a complete reformat, and clean install of your OS, then reinstall all your programs. Just find a good night where you have about 5hrs to pass by, and hopefully you got a tv by your comp so you can have something to do while everything installs.

i think jdbennet's reply makes sense. after restarting explorer everything went normal.

apparantly opening a bunch of windows will cause this problem. i was able to replicate this by opening 500+ windows at one time. in the past when i had windows 95 it took less time and less number of windows for it do bonk.

to answer some questions: i built the pc myself in december 2007, RAM is fine via bi-monthly memtests, no the older OS were in a different pc (which i still have), as for tweaks.... i don't remember all the things i did to this system but to my knowledge none are harmful, as for programs using a lot of resources.... nod32 and my kerio personal firewall would rack up huge page faults but memory usage would be normal.

thanks again
