Anyone else waiting for the AM3 Phenom IIs?

The AM2+ Denebs are coming very soon (January 8, 2009, supposedly), but is anyone else holding out for the AM3s?

Personally, I'm going to wait for the 925 because it's going to have a power draw of 95W, which will give me more overclocking headroom (my mobo only safely supports up to 125W, so overclocking a 125W CPU is a bit risky). Plus, it's AM3, so when the time comes to get a new mobo and DDR3 RAM, I'll be ready.

Then again, the AM2+s are going to rock, too. If I had a better mobo, I might get the 940 instead.

Nah I have a Q6600 while not as good as the Deneb/I7 will last me till 2010 ^-^

If I had a fat wallet id get a I7 and Deneb for my gf and myself though. Just to play with both systems.

I'll wait for the AM3 to come out before upgrading. I want to see some real world benchies of the Core i7 vs the Phenom II AM3, and price/performance of both. It's really tempting to just go ahead and get a Core i7 system, but my brain is telling me to wait and hope for a trick out of AMD's hat. Probably won't happen, but there is always hope

im getting the am2+ because it will be probably cheaper than the AM3s and my mobo cant support them

how can I find out how much W my mobo supports?

What kind of mobo do you have? My mobo listed the 125W Phenom support on the box and on the manufacturer's website.

If the AM2+s are in fact cheaper, I might buy the 940 and leave it stock (gasp) haha. 3.0 for a quad is plenty fast.

If it supports a 140W phenom, then yea, you're pretty much set without too many limitations. =) The only thing that's going to limit you is CPU heat (like everyone else), lack of SB750, and your PSU. Then again, which revision do you have? I noticed that revision 2.0 officially supports 140W, while 1.0 doesn't. If you have 1.0, I'm guessing you're in the same 125W boat as me.

Me...I have to be delicate with the mosfets, etc...=/ I'm seriously on the fence as to whether to get a 940 and leave it stock (3.0, 125W) or wait for the AM3 925 (2.8, 95W) and overclock it past 3GHz.

Will depend on price and my impatience haha...not the most patient person in the world.

lack of SB750

ughh what?

aww I have rev 1.0

wahh

so that means I wont be able to overclock my am2+ ?

The SB600 doesnt overclock as well as the SB700/750. But it still does ok. I have this 8750 to 3ghz. on stock voltage.

I have SB700 though so it's better than the SB600?

ps so if I do get the deneb 125 W I should be able to take it up 0.5 GHZ with a fan like the arctic cooler freezer pro 64?

SB700 should be better than 600, yes. It's hard to say whether 0.5GHz would be possible with the 125W limitation. These things supposedly OC very well, but in today's quads, 0.5 would definitely push the power draw to about 140W+. Maybe Denebs will be a lot more efficient...almost impossible to guess.

I hear the Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 64 works well for dual cores but aren't quite as good for quads. YMMV, of course. Who knows? Maybe AMD will include an amazing stock cooler with the CPU to aid overclocking. ;)

Dammit, AM3?? What the hell, AMD, what happened to supporting the same motherboard architecture???

Meh, whatever, it's not that bad to upgrade a motherboard, but still...

The 925 and 940 will both my AM2+ supported chips, supporting DDR2 memory.
The chips coming out later in the year are AM3 and will support DDR3.

Right the first two are AM2+ with DDR2 controllers. But the AM3 is going to have a DDR2/3 controller and will work on alot of AM2+ boards, Gigabyte has already released updates for alot a AM2+ boards. Dont think Gigabyte is going to offer bios updates for AM2 boards though.

Nonetheless i wish the Regor series would be out sooner that mid 2009. 45nm, 45w, 2.8ghz (speculatively) highly overclockable cpu? well hell yes. just think - a high powered - quite - setup.

Its hard to believe they are going to wait that long to update the X2 series. The Kuma 65nm. was killed at the end, think there were a few 65nm. X2 6500 released overseas. But maybe they might release a few AM2+ X2 45nm. Kumas before then.

Yeah in the uk they're like $170 or so for a 6500 BE. still. i don't really need a 3.4ghz oc'd phenom II. i need something that's got low power draw and low system noise, while still being able to game.

Was just lookin around and found this

Think they are going to release two different X2. One with a small amount of L3 and one without. Not for sure about that. There is going to be a Athlon X4 and Athlon X3 with less L3 than the Phenom II X4 and X3
