I'm getting sick of the blue microsoft screen at startup and want to use my own .bmp or .jpg file on the login screen. I know it can be done but I have no idea where to find the file so that I can change it.
anyone know how to change the startup screen on xp and vista?

For XP there are several to find while rather scarce for Vista at this time. One article detailing how to create personalized splash screens can be reviewed at http://www.advisor.com/Articles.nsf/AID/FISHS01
"In the Windows NT platform (NT, 2000, XP)the startup screens are in the Windows folder, named Lanma256.bmp,Lanmannt.bmp, Winnt.bmp, or Winnt256.bmp. They are loaded only if the file exists." was seen at Easydesk Software's troubleshooting page where you can replace the existing bmp file after backing it of course for sustitution of your own? Windows would in theory load yours thinking it was MS. http://www.easydesksoftware.com/common.htm#logos

Thanks for the info. I'm an idiot savant -or maybe just an idiot- when it comes to computers. It took me about a half hour to put my system together and get it ready to install the OS, but I really don't know much about how it all works.
That's another one too. There are several that came out as well as a few articles on registry edits to look over.

I always used stardock bootskin (http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/)
Its safe and works very well. There are tons of skins on wincustomize.com
you can also change the logon screen using logon studion i think. There is some pretty cool stuff you can put on there. Thats at the same place as the bootskin. Here is the DL site: http://www.stardock.com/products/logonstudio/

The thing to remember here that these programs/utilities are geared mainly for XP and the older versions of Windows. Vista does have some differences there to consider since ou didn't mention which version you are going to run there. For a preinstalled XP system one article found gives instruction on how to create your own rescue/setup disk if none was provided with the system. You can look that over at http://www.howtohaven.com/system/createwindowssetupdisk.shtml Of course this is a little late for the demise you already saw on one preinstalled copy of Windows.
