Archiving - Best Way?

Hello,

Currently I have a 250gb External Harddrive which I have placed on the network to hold video files. The total of video files I have on there is 221gb. Each video file is about 800mb --> 1.7gb (average), this is after I have placed them in a .rar file.

As you can see by the figures I am running out of space. Obviously I can buy another drive etc. But is there a better way of 'compressing' .rar files or there contents - which are .mpg files?

This on a Windows machine mainly.

i would be impressed if someone said 'yes' there is a better compression. actually they don't compress worth a damn. To big. no compression ratio. your better off from my experience just uncompress without rar files. buy a bigger hd say 500 gig and be done with it. if i had say family movies i want to make sure i will never loose i will create repair files in case of corruption. Quickpar is free. Usually compression, and ive tried them does not compress. get a big hd and be done with it.

Thanks for the response. Would you recomend something like a NAS drive? Like this link on eBay.

im not familiar with nas drive. i have a maxtor external and very small. i never found it to be a problem for backups though. you could wait and suggest you do. others will reply. looks like it work fine. not nothing portable about it though. im almost thinking ya might as well just buy and internal drive.

A NAS is a great idea. It gives you the added security of a RAID. If you have a network set up with a switch or router, that's what to do. If you don't, then choose either a NAS with USB connectivity or just buy a 2 drive USB RAID enclosure and put a couple of drives in it.

The real purpose of a NAS is to provide shared storage for networked computers. I use them just for backup. They are fast, reliable and very secure thanks to the RAID configuration.
