I wish someone had mention it to me before i bought my computer because ever since someone told me that this brand wasnt a good brand, i have been paranoid about leaving my computer on overnight just to render a clip because im scared it's going to blow up and possibly burn my house down. lol :o

it is a hyena 500w safety ball bearing 24 pin sata pci.

What exactly makes these psu explode?

well cheap componants can make a faulty psu, but most have been checked to a standard so an explosion/risk of fire is minimal!

however i have had a psu go bang on me in a pc i was fixing, nice spark and a pop was heard nothing caught fire

I wouldn't worry to much about it burning your house down, but off-brand PSU's generally do not take well to being run flat-out. Granted, the CPU alone will not use anywhere close to 500W, but cheaper PSU's tend to fail if they're run above 75-85% of their rated power for any long amount of time. (you're probably using 40-50% at most) Simply put, they use inferior parts and overrate their power output.

When they fail, a number of things could happen. They can slowly lose output, eventually causing data corruption and odd behavior, or they can just shut off, or they can fail with a spectacular(if short) display of sparks. That last one is what you want to watch out for, because if the PSU surges and pushed too much voltage through the computer, it can potentially destroy everything that's attached to it.

Oh it's happened before, for sure, but such a thing is highly unlikely. Most homes do have adequate circuit-breakers for that sort of thing, and even if it catches fire(unlikely), it's still contained in both the PSU shell and the computer case.

that's why they are called "Hyena", they're laughable

Ouch that's bad! LOL

I had a PSU that came with my PowerUp case about four or five years ago. It lasted quite a while (almost 3-4 years) before it died. I could tell it was on it's way out by the fact that it would nt boot into Windows with all my HDD's pluged in.

I wouldn't worry terribly like the other posters above me said. Just be caustious though because if a PSU goes, it can take the whole machine with it

ok thanks for the replies, now i can sleep peacefully when my computer is running overnight! :p

i have a 3 year warranty on my computer so if it does explode, and takes everything with it, the warranty will cover it right? :)

I'd say it should. I don't see why not.
