Are LCD's actually better than CRT's?

Forget about all that cosmetic crap for just one second....

Do LCD's actually have any advantages over CRT's (other than the size of the thing)?

I'm looking to get a new screen, and I'm trying to decide whether it is worth the extra $$$ for and LCD.

Apart from size, not really. CRT's are probably a lot better, a lot crisper image and usually a higher refresh rate. The only reason someone would go for a LCD is for size rquirements or a style icon. I agree that if you shell out a lot of cash for a decent LCD then sometimes t will beat off its CRT competitiors but in a low-mid budget iw ould definately say CRT all the way.

even a low grade crt would beat a top end lcd for refresh rate, res and contrast. Size is the main factor for lcds success imagine the size of a 19+ crt?

it does black better than lcds.

This is because a CRT can simply not fire an electron at the pghosphor that it wants to be black, in a LCD/TFT, to get "true" black the cren would have to shut off the pixel which is impossible to do without turning the whole screen off. To get black they make the pixel diplay the darkest dhade of grey that it can reach, which is sometimes very noticeable on cheap LCD's

and lcd generally uses less power say a 16in crt i used to own puts 75w while the 19in lcd puts only 45w

Heya

In my personal opinion, LCDs are more eye-strain friendly. I have always had a problem when watching CRTs (crappy and good). Somehow, for some strange reason, my eyes hurt after about an hour of using one. I never came across that problem with LCDs. However, I may be the only one experiencing that ;).

i find that true too, but i am using a laptop and i dont think that that rly matter

personally I have never had the comparison, never had a crt laptop.. ;)

What I like about CRTs is that they are bright, this stupid dell lappy that I'm on has a very dim screen.

we'll im using a 21" crt monitor atm, and yes is really heavy and big (thought it was about 28Kg). i had to reinforce my computer table, otherwise it would have collapsed a long time ago.
but ill ick to it, cuz the LCD's are way to expensive ^_^

So really the only thing that LCD's have got going for them is their weight and their physical size, and possibly their fashion statement. For all "working" aspects a CRT is hundreds of times better??

LCD panels at least ones with 8ms times I think can finally compete with CRT's.
Otherwise CRT is the way to go you only loose a little desktop space.
