Are they as good?

So I was looking at the normal Saturday ads in the newspaper and I was looking at Best Buy and Circuit City as usual and I was checking out there deals they had on laptops. I saw some HP's that to me seemed like a good deal and seemed like pretty good laptops. For example HP INtel Core 2 Duo Processor Windows Vista Home Premium, 3GB DDR2 memory, 250GB hard drive and other additives for $649.99.

So I was just wondering are these laptops good or lets say last long or at least decent amount? Or is it worth the money to spend a couple more hundred to get the the $1000 range for a laptop? Is that $1000 laptop going last longer then this one?
 
I have an HP laptop (Pavilion ZD8000) and it has been very, very good to me.

I have put it through the works... reformatted and reinstalled the operating system a number of times (I intentionally got a laptop with the operating system CD supplied - Non OEM) due to basic lack of maintenance and user negligence, but it has never had a hiccup.

It didn't compain when I upgraded the RAM and the only piece of hardware I have had to replace was the DVD RW drive. This was due to burning so many disks. Expensive lesson but I now choose to burn all my CD's / DVD's on an external drive.

If I'm ever in the market for a new laptop I will defenitely go with HP again. This laptop is 3-4 years old now and still going as good as the day I got it.

Ohhh.... one niggle. Battery life is not very good. This particular laptop is a multimedia centre with 3 big fans underneath and a 17" screen size. And the unit is a little on the heavy side.

If you can get the model number of the HP laptop as a bit of reseach it might pay to google hp model # + reviews
 
I've got a HP (can't remember the model number) that's a little over a year old now. It runs great and I haven't had any problems with it. It started slowing down just recently and I reformatted and re-installed Vista and it's back to running like a brand new computer. I don't do any gaming, but it handles everything else I throw at it without any problems.
