ARGH!!!!! External hard drive security! GRR

I'm going insane for the past 2-3 hours trying to encrypt my external hard drive. It hasn't worked for a few reasons which aren't important (although I do want to tear my hair out with a fork after trying).

It makes ZERO SENSE for me to encrypt my Mac with FileVault and then back up onto the external hard drive -- the backups aren't encrypted!!!! DUH! I want to smack something I'm so frustrated. So I try to encrypt the drive -- FAIL. I try to create a container and transfer it to the drive -- FAIL x 2. Then my Mac starts acting like a spastic monkey on coke and I need to reboot the whole @^$(!&&#*&#*( thing. GRKAJGGEJSHBKDJHGAGAAAAAAAA

I want to ensure the backup info on my hard drive is at least secured in some form. Encryption seems to be a dead end.

Can I password protect it somehow!? I've had it up to here (gesturing at my eyeballs) downloading cheap s**** from the net and having it clutter up my system with crap and garbage -- so is there a way, any way on earth, to protect the contents of this external hard drive?

Thanks and sorry if I sound like a spaz but I'm soooooo over this crap today.

Oh, I just want to rant about something else that's related....

Time Machine -- What a great invention! Yes! Except every time you back up your junk with it, it makes a WHOLE 'NOTHER backup copy of your whole entire system on the external hard drive.

Why is that important? Because when you want to clear the crap off the drive, your poor system's trash bin has to accept about a ZILLION BAJILLION TRILLION files to delete! Thank heaven I didn't try to do the SECURE DELETE! -- Oh wait, I did, and I quit cuz it took forever and I couldn't delete anything!

For the love of all things sacred, Mac developers need to fix Time Machine! I don't need eighteen exact copies of the same backup cluttering up my entire existence!!! GRRRRRR.
