artifacts developed on 6 month old card

Hi, I have a X800XL 256mb AGP (XpertVision) and it ran all the games perfectly with no problems until recently when it started showing artifacts even when not playing a game. I formatted the computer and installed all new drivers and the problem seemed fixed but after playing batllefield 2142 for 15 minutes it started doing it again and then the screen froze and went blank. Now it has gone back to doing all the artifacts from start up just in windows without any programs running.

I put in my old card and there were no problems.

Any ideas as to the problem???

Fan is working fine and i even have an extra fan blowing air from outside the case onto the card. Seems wired though that the problem went when I formatted and then came back.
 
No its not overclocked. I think the key thing here is that nothing has changed on my system and that the problem has just developed. Does anyone know how this could have happened? Do sometimes the cards just develop problems?
