AS5 Question

I am installing aftermarket coolers on my GPU's, and was wondering if I need to apply a special thermal compound, it's the 8800GT, do I have to apply Arctic Silver Ceramique, or can I use Arctic Silver High-Density Polysynthetic Silver.

I'm pretty sure my only problem would be it conducting electricity, right?

And I just bought these coolers, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186016 are those RAM Heatsinks fine?

I am going to be upgrading my current coolers on my graphic cards, and am a bit worried, if I can get some tips or a tutorial to follow, I'll be fine.

Thanks.

well, i used AS5 on my 7800gt, and ceramique on its RAM... but that cooler looks like it'll be fine with AS5 on all of the parts. keep in mind you want the thinnest layer of it that you can get, otherwise the ceramique will conduct more heat.

note: ceramique will paste things together, and you will not be able to remove a heatink once you've ran a part for some time.

Alright, just so I can have piece of mind when doing this, I'll ask a few questions.

This is what I'm going to buy,

And this,
http://www.radioshack.com/product/i...silver&origkw=arctic+silver&parentPage=search

Are those two things fine?

  1. I was told Ceramique doesn't conduct electricity and that's why I should use it on my GPU
  2. Is there a correct way to align the RAM heatsinks?
  3. If I can't find an Anti Static bag, what else works just as well?

I think that's all I'm worried about atm.

Thanks.

oh, using ram-sinks huh? they come with a pre-applied sticky film on them that conducts heat. don't bother using anything else on them you will only complicate things more. those are great ramsinks btw, i threw a few on my big typhoon and dropped my cpu temps by like 2C... the sticky paste that they come with is great, just don't touch it or anything its like tape it loses its stickiness.

as for the anti-static bag --- touch your computer case, it will ground you!
don't walk on a rug with socks on either. i've built probably 30 or 40 computers before and i've never shocked anything. but i did get shocked by a plugged in psu before. not fun.

dang.. does the forum double post a lot for you too? i always have to go back and delete a post. oh and when i try to post it also sends me to a webpage with like 2 ads on it instead of sending me back to the forum. ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Well, I walked to RadioShack, and they didn't have the paste or ram-sinks, lol.

My new coolers came with ram-sinks, I think, should I use those?

And what about the thermal paste, the cooler has it pre applied, should I take that off with Isopropyl rubbing alcohol 70% and reapply the ceramique, or will any kind of Arctic Silver work?

Thanks.

AC5 works perfectly fine..I used it on my 8800gt along with the AC Accelero S1. Just wipe off the existing thermal paste and clean the ram chips before sticking on the ram sinks.

I ended up finding the Thermaltake ram-sinks and AS Ceramique. I could only get two sets Thermaltake ram-sinks, and they have 8 each, think 8 is enough for One card? Also, should I use the thermal tape that's already on it?

Thanks.

use a diamond paste while your at it, you could see 7*C cooler, but if you've already done it, don't worry, i think there are 8 or 10 ramchips on the cards though

Well, it looks like I have 9 chips on one card, and I have two packs of the Thermaltake ram-sinks, that have 8 each.. My coolers came with 8 ram-sinks as well, should I just use one of those with the Thermaltake ones?
