ASAP help!

my dad brought home a computer and told me to fix it.
problem is that the wireless internet does NOT connect at all ... everytime that i press "connect" after typing in the password, the windw just closes ...
my dad also told me that the owners son was deleting "things" and i dont know what they are ...

the system restore was turned off ...
and the AVG says that the computer is in as "error state" ...

HELP
i will be on for a while ....
 
What are the computer specifications when you look at System Information? What operating system is it running? Have you got the OS installation CD?

the computer is running XP professional ed. 2002
256MB mem.
2 GB HD
846 MHz
Intel P. III


wierd ... the system restore is enabled, but the computer says that it is "suspended" cause there is insufficient space in the Hard Drive hm ... i cant work my way around it, cause there is JUST enough space for the computer to run and THATS IT ....

i could buy a bigger hard drive, but i am not really an installer type of person .. if i do that, then i can work however ....
 
no, i do not have the installation CD for THIS COMPUTER

but i do have one for a dell ... would that work???
i dont have the CD key .... well, atleast it doesnt work for some stupid reason ...
 
As a last resort with no installation disc, you could always buy a copy of xp pro for about $140 and reinstall it...

a 2GB HDD? Your serious.

Get a bigger hard drive and an OEM copy of XP Pro. It's pretty cheap on Newegg.
 
i have an old compaq with 3.24 gbs of HDD. my ipod hold more than that. technology is crazy

i just got a copy of XP Pro and i and copying it to a flash ...

do i just install it on top of the existing one?
or do i have to do something first ... i am new to installing OSs

also i was planning to buy a portable external HD ... or just install one in the computer ..
question about externals ... cal you install programs onto it? and have it work on other computers?
 
so is this going to fix my problem with the wireless??? cause i am still sketchy ...

and also (dont remember if i said this) but the computer no longer reads DVDs ... he said it used to, but it does read CDs though ...

when i try to play DVDs, Windows Media Player gives me this error:

WMP cannot play this DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not Installed on your computer ...

ill try updating WMP

yes it may be old, but its money for me ... and i kinda need a bit of money cause i am going to go to college soon so anything can help ...

this may be a pain to fix, but i kinda have nothing else to do at the moment ...
 
so i just tried reinstalling it ... and it told me that i cant since there is not enough space on the HD ...

what do i do next ... external HD?
upgrade the HD?
 
How much money are you looking to get out of it?

Honestly, any money you have to spend would be a waste, as an external hdd is probably worth about as much as the computer itself.
 
i can make it as much as i want ...

i just wanna start out with fixing the darn thing cause i have no idea with limited space ... i checked, about 1.5 GB are windows files, and i kinda dont wanna tamper with those ... ya know?
