ASUS A7N8X-X Help

Hello!!

I'm new here and in my other thread I was talking about which motherboard I should get. Well, I have had a thought and I think I'm going to be getting an ASUS A7N8X-X. Good choice? Well anyway, before I buy it (for £20! I think that includes postage ) I can't find out the maximum processor it can support (can't see it in the item description?). I'm thinking about possibly a AMD Athlon XP 2500+ or 2600+... Good or bad? Any suggestions as to what processor I should buy? On a budget aswell, looking to spend perhaps £30 to £55. I know you don't get them that price in shops (do you? not sure) but you sure can on ebay ;).

It's going to be a gaming pc, so I wan't a considerable amount of decent gameplay (I like UT2004 alot :P). I'm getting a GameBomb case - 400W PSU with it. Is that good enough? Also, which RAM? I want a GIG of RAM preferably, if I have to, I'll go with 512MB and save up for another stick later... I saw this:

Brand New 1024MB PC3200 400Mhz DDR RAM (1GB) Single Stick

1024MB 128X64 High Density DIMM Configuration

Size: 1GB (1024MB)
Speed: PC3200 ( Backward Compatible with PC3200, PC3000, PC2700, PC2400, PC2100, PC1600
Type: 184 Pin SDRAM
Registered/Unbuffered: Unbuffered Non-Parity, Non-ECC Non-Registered
Chip Configuration: 128M x 64 -Bit (Made With 128x4 Hi-Density Dram)
Condition New
Compatility: COMPATIBILITY NOTE Please Check Hi-Density Compatibility. Does Not work in Any ASUS Boards and if you have an Nvidia nForce2, Intel 865, or Intel 875 Chipsets or AMD 64

I know it says it doesn't work with any ASUS Boards, but that's only if I have an "Nvidia nForce2, Intel 865, or Intel 875 Chipsets or AMD 64". Is that the processor? If it is then I should be ok with an AMD Athlon XP Processor, with that RAM? I'm not sure, so I need some help with this bit...

I think I'm getting 120 GB of Hard Drive Space - MAXTOR 2 MB Cache and 7200 RPM.

I already have a Graphics card - nVidia FX5200 AGP...

Should I get fans, if so, can you specify some, name? and at what price? Size?

Ok, thanks :D

It can support any AthlonXP you throw at it.

Either get a 2500/2800 and OC it or get a 3200 and run it stock. The CPU wont really be much of a bottleneck as the videocard/memory subsystems :)

The memory, if its standard and has the right number of pins, will work on that mobo. I know ive thrown a lot of diferent types of memory at the A7N8X-X that I used to have

Two fans stick out: [1] Thermaltake Volcano12 Extreme [2] Thermaltake Silentboost K7. With the 1st one you can have an insane amount of cooling (and noise) but also the option of dropping the speed/noise down via fan controller and is prolly the better route. The second option is extremely quiet yet still supports OCing and stuff

And Semprons(S462)

What do you mean?
Like i said, damn near any AthlonXP you can throw at it :)

Thanks praetor !!

how about a 2600? I think I'll get one of those.... Also, OC stuff makes me scared :o Just the thought of braking something in a newly brought PC and when OCing you ruin the guarantee (don't you?).

By the way, where have you seen the cheapeast Athlon XP 2600 Processor from? I don't want to spend about £60 to get one, perhaps £40. Will there be much of a difference between a 2500 and 2600? Oh and by the way, not trying to be rude, but I need answers to this quicly, as the item has only 10 hours left I think, and will be finished when I'm sleeping. That means I have to bid for it soon....

Cheers :)

Depends how much more expensive it is compared to the 2500 ... the clock difference is like 33Mhz or something.

1. Common sense usually is good enough to avoid serious damage
2. I dunno about warranties ... never bothered :P

They're not really available in Canada anymore (well in Ontario at least). Thats because AMD has phased out the AthlonXP line of products.

No. Thats why i suggested the 2500/2800 (for OCing). if you want out-of-the-box performance, the XP3200 would be the route to go.

hmmmmmmm

I think the 3200 is too expensive for me :S
I'm on a budget you see, it's for xmas, and my mum has to support 3 other people in my family, plus another due to my sisters fiance :)

I think I'll get a 2500 or 2600, whichever one.... Also, If I OC a 2500 what would it go up to? And also, if I OC something will it get damaged? You said "serious damage", so what do you mean then... that when you OC something you "damage" it?

Thanks. I think I'll go with the ASUS A7N8X-X . Good choice I think, and will offer me a year atleast if I want to upgrade stuff... Thanks praetor, couldn't have done this (still doing it ;)) without ya!

Cheers!

I think this will work with mobo, just want to check with you...

The title says "AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Processor - Barton 333MHz FSB"

This is the item description:

Athlon XP 2800+

Type: Barton
FSB: 166/333MHz
Socket: Socket A
Core: 13nm
Die size: 101mm²
Transistors: 54.3 million

Cache L1 Instructions: 64KB
Cache L1 Datas: 64KB
Cache L2: 512KB
Operating voltage: 1.65V
Multiplier: 12.5
Power (max): 68.6W
Die temperature (max): 85°C
CPU data bus width: 64-bit

Any good?

At the minute, it's at £16, and that is a fantastic price :D

Thanks.

EDIT:

I also found this......

AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2600 Processor

There's a sentence in the item description that says:
"We do not think the processor is compatible with desktop motherboards, it may be only for use in portables."

They don't actually know whether it would work in a desktop mobo. Does anyone know whether it would work it an ASUS A7N8X-X?

I know I'm asking a lot at the moment, but I'm 14 years old, and must LEARN LEARN LEARN!! :D

Thanks again.

By the way, what is the difference between PC1600, PC2100, PC2700, PC3200.
PC1600 = 100MHz
PC2100 = 133MHz
PC2700 = 166MHz
PC3200 = 200MHz

I think this will work with mobo, just want to check with you...
It works. Like I said, "any AthlonXP you can throw at it"

AMD Athlon XP Mobile 2600 Processor
Thats a better chip for OCing but since it runs on a 266Mhz bus instead of a 333MHz one I have a hard time reccomending it :)

It would work

So is a 266Mhz bus slower? In what way does this decrease performance?

Thanks :D

1. 266 is slower than 333 yes.
2. The 266MHz BUS is the speed at which everything operates so the slower that is the slower everything is
