Asus EEE PC fun

Well I installed Windows XP and Vista on the EEE pc today. I used the standard OEM XP with SP2, and a lite version of Vista ultimate. I have to say both version run snappy, though XP is the winner for performance(obviously...). I had trouble finding a Vista driver for the wlan, so I'm downgrading back to xp now. If you have any questions on what it can and can't do, just ask. I have this thing till tomorrow.

Is that machine made by Dell under the ASUS brand?

lets put it this way,

my vista ultimate is the preactivated dell version.

therefore the dell logo shows up in the system info.

thats why its there.. not cos dell made it

how is the original os?

The original os isn't bad once you activate the full desktop view. I do much prefer the compatibility of xp, especially for wireless networking, and ease of use.

Yes, it was torrented. I don't intend to keep this installed though, since I don't actually own this eee pc. I'm just borrowing it for a couple days. It will get formatted to either windows xp or back to the original asus os, depends on what the customer chooses.

You know, now that XP is on it, it does seem like quite a slick little unit. I'd personally wait for the 9" model, cause the screen is quite small with not the greatest resolution. But it definately works, and it does work well. I'd recommend it if you need an ultra portable for any reason.

Yeah i saw that vista lite edition and thought about it for my moms pos dell but, im not a big fan of cracked os's! Thats just crossing the line for me. Music is a different story! LOL

what was wrong with the Linux OS that comes on that thing? Just curious because my friend has one and he raves about how awesome it is, and he is using the factory OS, which is a derived from Debian I believe.

It's not bad, but definately not as nice and easy to use as windows. I may be biased, cause I'm not a linux fan, but it really does work a lot nicer with XP. Seems to be faster with XP as well.

It's kind of a shoddy version they use, could have definately used more optimizing. There are some settings you can't even change because the window doesn't fit on the screen, and this is on an OS thats made for these friggin things. Then again, your supposed to use the "simple" version of the OS (which is just as useless as the Palm OS), so it doesn't surprise me that the unlocked "full" desktop isn't as optimized as it could be.
