Hey everyone I am looking for a laptop that I want to get as my high school graduation present since I am attending college for Information Systems and Technologies with a networking option at Penn State and I wanted your opinion. I know that Dell has a great name with customer support, but I was reading about this Asus G1 and it seems like a decent laptop. I mainly want to use this for some gaming, but mainly for internet and school work. I dont know if it is worth spending almost an extra 600-900 dollars on a laptop that could be just as good for cheaper. Does anyone have any of these laptops or has another laptop that they really enjoy for the things I mentioned that I would like to do with it. Also, I wanted to know if anyone has broaband internet for their laptop and which company do they use? If you could help me out it would be greatly appreciated! If you have any questions feel free to ask. Thanks for your help!

Jeff

I feel sorry for people who are so misguided by dells "name"
dell used to be descent. but now they have gone downhill. their
prices are too high for the quality they provide.

did you know Asus has even better name.
which xpc were you looking at. there is one with 17'' screen.
g1 comes with 15.4.

asus has g2 with 17''. I would definetely go with g2 than dell xpc.
I mean if money is not the issue for you, buy asus. don't even think
about dell. --> dell often uses junk parts and does not tell you when it's junk.

but also think about how will you carry a notebook. I had inspiron 9100 and it was 8lbs. a little too heavy. you can only carry a laptop in a back pack.

I would go with g1.

is this first time you are buying laptop?
if you plan to carry it around a lot. then large gaming book is too heavy and
will be very uncomfortable to carry around.

after a while you will switch to 14'' monitor. look at resolution of screen. 1280x800 on wide 14'' looks good. 1450x900 --> thinkgs may appear a little too small.

this one is really good for the price. but people complained about the screen

look at what video cards the notebooks have. radeon cards generally eat much more energy than nvidias. find 3dmark(05, 06 or another year) scores for each card. make sure you compare 3dmarks scores of the same year 3dmark.

My Conclusion:

The Asus G1/G2 are not as powerful as the Dell XPS 1710 but the dell is really high priced. The reviews I see from people on say newegg.com or other places, for both laptops could not be more happy with their purchase. I think it all boils down to how much you want to spend, and how much power you will be getting for what your spending. (is it worth it to buy a $2800 dollar laptop that will just be old technology next year?)

The Asus g1/g2 will play the latest games although not as fast as the Dell, just look at the reviews I posted above they show in game frame rates for the asus G2/G1 in the asus g2 link above..

Anyhow you can also ask this question on the notebook forum, link above..

Hope this helps in your decision making.

game power comes from video card not the brand of computer.
xpc has second to 8800 nvidia card.
other than that they have the same mobo chip, the same processors
same memory.
so it's essentially video card price that makes xpc more expensive.

asus is definetely sexier looking. and more reliable.
you know you will have asus mobo on g1 or g2. I don't know what is put
on xpc.

Yes MrJohnDough is right, I was being short:rolleyes: . He would have found all that out by doing his own research anyways, do people really take others words for it in these forums anyways? That’s why I try to post links and such for them, so they can see for themselves. Thanks for clarifying though... ;)

Go with Asus. Asus is an ODM for some of the best laptop makers. Asus also makes Apple products. Apple is pretty much the pinnacle of product quality in notebooks. Second to Apple is a fierce fight between Lenovo/IBM and Asus.

If you demand a notebook from the "big" manufacturers, get an HP. Fairly solid build quality, good screens, good performance and a price which is only slightly behind Dell's. However, if you can bring yourself to order from the internet, the Asus laptops are very good. Have you looked at the Asus A8J series? There's an A8JS and an A8JP, one with an X1700, and the other with a GeForce Go 7700. Both of them are very fast and lots of fun.

One thing to consider is this: Smaller screens are more portable, as mentioned. They also require less power while you're mobile on the battery. You can buy a good 19, 20, or 21" monitor to plug into while you are at home plugged into an outlet for gaming, but that smaller screen will be a real saver on cost and battery life. Only thing to watch out for is that as the screens get smaller, the graphics subsystems can get weaker as well as the manufacturer is going for tighter books that don't have as much room for big heatsinks. This is why its hard to get more then a GF7700 out of a small(less then 15") notebook.

Don't buy for a while though. Those ar egood choices now, but its just the tip of the iceberg. You have DX10 mobile platforms coming here in the next few months. You also have Santa Rosa dropping (read up on it) in a few months as well. This will either drive prices of old computers down, or else it will give you access to that new technology. Solid-State Flash Drives are also coming here very soon, which offers even more battery life and such.

Hey guys thanks for all the posts. I appreciate all the imput and I am looking toward a 15" or 17" at most for a laptop. I am really not favoring one brand or just going with a major brand, but I just want one that will handle my needs and a little gaming also. I would say I would want one that could play games along the lines of Battlefield 2. But I am in no rush for this laptop since it will be a graduation present in June so I was just doing a little research on them for now. I will definitely wait for the DX10 because I saw the screen shots for them in a magazine and they look incredible! I will further research the different types or laptops but I just wanted to see what kind of opinions you guys would have and I could see that you guys help greatly. I was wondering if anyone has anything to say about the Sony Vaio computers, but as of right now I think I want to wait for a new Asus laptop to come out and I think that will be my best bet. Does anyone know when the new lineup is comming out and what are some good points about it? Thanks for all the help already!

I don't mean to hijack a thread but, how portable is a laptop with a 17 inch screen? Are they pretty clunky and bulky? I know the XPS M1710 (which I'm thinking of purchasing, but later) is about 9 or so lps, overall whats it like to carry a peice of technology such as this?
