asus p6t onboard sound

i have a 5.1 speaker system setup on my mobo but only get it when i play things w/ 5.1 capability. For example, a dvd or game w/ play in 5.1 but mp3's will only play in stereo 2.0. I know this is because songs usually only have a stereo output, but does anyone know a way to force 2.0->5.1?

Also, did you go into settings (I think its Realtek Audio Manager) and change your speaker configuration from 2.0 to 5.1?
 
Onboard audio usually does not upmix 2.0 to 5.1 well. I use to have Realtek onboard sound and remember there being an option but it sounded horrible.

win 7, its onboard audio, and yes i have installed all up to date drivers

in the cp->sound->playback i have "speakers" enabled to be 5.1, and i can hear all corresponding beeps from the test.

i'm looking for a way to force 2.0 to 5.1 so left will get played in front/back left, right will be played in front/back right and center will be both...

any more ideas?
 
If you want propper 5.1 sound you should get a dedicated soundcard :) the Creative X-Fi's are good, along with the Asus Xonar and some other ones i cant remember.

I had to do the same thing with mine. It's makes most thing sound better although some stuff doesn't sound as good.

He has proper 5.1 it's just that when he listens to something that is not 5.1 it only plays in 2.1. He just wanted to know how to force those things to play in 5.1 instead of 2.1. Looks like he figured it out him self, it's nothing but a simple setting under the audio manager.
