Asus Q550LF Will Not Boot

Hello everyone,

My laptop will not boot up.

It all started a few days ago. The laptop would not boot on battery when i tried to boot it up Thursday (ill fill you in on the symptoms in a bit). I thought nothing of it, at first, i plugged it into the wall, and it booted up fine. A few minutes after boot, it shut off. I waited a minute, then turned it on again, and it worked without incident the rest of the night.

Fast forward to the next day: after work I come home and my laptop wont boot at all. Plugged into the wall or otherwise.

I did a lot of research online, and have performed the following troubleshooting techniques:
1. re-seating RAM/booting with one or the other in the primary slot.
2. Unplugging the computer, taking out the battery and attempting to turn it on for a minute (I saw this fixed a lot of people's problems) then putting the battery back in to attempt to boot it up. This didn't work either.

Symptoms: When I say it wont boot up, here is what happens:

Plugged in, the battery light is dimly lit green (means full charge, I would guess).
When I press the power button, the front indicator lights turn on, as it would normally. I hear the hard drive click a few times, then all the lights turn off on the front, and then the computer stops everything(lights shut off, hard drive stops spinning)(similar to a full power loss). At no point in time does the screen power up. This whole process takes about 3 seconds from power button push to crash.

After a second or two the green battery light slowly turns on again. It almost seems like the laptop was trying to boot off of way less power than it should have, promptly spending that power, then shutting off.

I have also tried this not plugged in (same result, except the green light is not on), and without the battery in, but plugged in (same result, except the battery light is orange, indicating charging). The computer always tries to boot for two seconds, then crashes.

What I know: not much, sadly. I do know my hard drive is good, as I bought an enclosure for it to get my important files off it. I have a suspicion it could be the motherboard, but not enough to warrant buying one without knowing a little more. Also, my ASUS is out of warranty.

Before Thursday my computer was fine. If anyone has any advice, or has had a similar problem, I would be very happy to hear from you. Thanks for your time.

For the heck of it remove the hard drive and see if you get screen activity. Also, if you can access it, try removing the cmos battery for a few minutes while the battery is removed and ac power is unplugged. Also press and hold the power button for 10 seconds.

John, Thank you for your input.

I have tried booting without the hard drive, no luck with screen activity. I cant see the CMOS battery, I dont think I can access it.

Anything else I can try to possibly narrow down the issue?

Check all your ports, particularly your USB and charging port. Make sure they didn't get damaged and are shorting it out.

See if they look damaged, such as the metal prongs/pins being bent or touching each other or the sides of the port. I don't really think that's what the issue but it's still something worth checking.
