ive had the asus radeon 9550 for about 18 months now and im pondering with the idea of getting a newer grahics card. i was wondering if anyone could advise me on what to do. My current graphics card has.

ATi Radeon 9550 VPU (visual processing unit)
SMARTSHADER provides the programmable shader abilities for visual realism
SMOOTHVISION generates the sharp and clear images by built-in anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering
HyperZlll﹢with double the Z compression (8:1) for improved memory compression
VIDEOSHADER HD-FULLSTREAM video de-blocking technology for Real, DivX and WMV9 format
Microsoft DirectX 9 and OpenGL 1.5 support
AGP 8X support
128-bit Memory Interface

i was just wanted to know whether i needed to update yet or not. Im not having any trouble running any games with it at the moment and ive ran games like call of duty 2 and doom 3 on high grahics with no problem, but with ever increasing games technology and with Windows Vista coming out early next year surely ill need a new one soon?

With the card no longer being supported by ATI you have the option to upgrade to a newer AGP model like the Asus Radeon X1600 Pro 256mb model seen at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102666R if you are on a budget.

The 9550 used to smoke Half Life 2 and other games at high details. I'm very familiar with that model. But anything after the Control Panel 5.11 update is geared for the newer models. Newegg still sees a high price on the X700 and X800 AGP models. The new line of DX10 cards probably won't be seen until the last half of 2007. The current DX 9 cards will run Vista and DX10 alike.

yea my little cousin and my dads computer both have that video card... its outdated to say the least.
what are your computers specs? no use upgrade the video card if you've got 256mb-512mb of memory...
if you get an x1600pro that would balance out with 1gb of memory, and if you get a high end graphics card like the x1900xt or better, then i'd get 2gb of memory for it. my 7800gt plays quake 4 on high settings easily... but if i only had 1gb of memory then it would have a much tougher time playing it on highest settings and i would have to lower it to "high" instead of "ultra" just because it uses so much memory (1.3-1.7gb depending on the part of the game)

-first off, what are your system specs...
-second off, what games do you play, and do you want it to be very "future-proof"
-third off... what's your budget?

ive got

amd athlon 3200+ 2.2ghz
512mg ddr ram - don't know wot speed - will have 1g in about 2 weeks tho
that grahics card
a s**te biostar mobo
80gig maxtor hd

i play mostly war games like bf142, cod2 and bf2. Also sports games like fm 2006, 2007 cricket 05 and fifa 07.

Christmas budget so i don't kno yet!!!

well... waiting for DX10 isnt an option, since you would have to get a new motherboard with pci-e.
hmm.,. 3200+ 2.2GHz.. is it a s754 Athlon 64? (Clawhammer was the name i think) if so, the pc is pretty decent imo :)
if its a A64 processor, and you have 1Gb RAM soon... i can only suggest a http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=1069609639&Submit=ENE&Description=7600GS&Ntk=all

they would make the system pretty good balanced (imo )
what power supply do you have if i may ask? ( could be important,.. altough, the 7600GS isnt THAT power hungry :) )

You are most likely running the AMD Atholon XP3200 2.21ghz cpu with either DDR333 PC2700 or DDR400 PC3200 memory. Since you are running an AGP not PCI-Express board unless both are available on that model the X1600 Pro would be one of the top AGP type video cards you could upgrade to. The increase in memory will help even with the 9550.

I would wait until vista and directx10 for sure
waiting for DX10 isnt an option, since you would have to get a new motherboard with pci-e.
that and dx 10 will not be needed for some time yet

i picked up the 7600gc a month ago, plays oblivion in high setting, at good res, with no-AA, just fine.
But did oc it a lot :)

Not the s754 3200+.. it has a multiplier of 11x. ;)

The Atholon XP3200 wasn't a Socket 754 model. You are probably thinking of the 3400+ Semprons.

So what ?

X1600pro doesn't perform as good as 7600GS. and the one you posted is an open boxhttp://

It all depends at what you are looking at. FPS only? The 9550 ran like a top here with everything like high details in games cranked up. The current Radeon X1300 Pro PCI-E model with only 4 pixel pipelines still runs games like HL2, SoF2, Far Cry, CSS, and several others if you know how to run the card. The idea is to get into a card that's not going to be without driver support in a few months from being on the discontinued line.
