At my wits end with wireless!!

Hi I am new to this forum. I have a Amilo M7400 laptop which is about 4 years old. The kind people at Orange have sent me a livebox which means that instead of only using my laptop in one room I can move around the house!! (NOT) my problem is that I cannot find how to switch the wireless ON there is a 'hot key' to the right of the keyboard which has a wireless symbol on it but nothing happens when I press it. If I click on the wireless bit in control panel it says its working correctly but in my network connections it says it is not connected. I would love to connect my livebox to my computer (have been told it can take up to 10 days to allow registration to complete - this wouldn't affect my ability to turn the wireless bit of my computer on would it???) but alas I can't. One strange thing though was my 'easy set up guide' this arrived with my livebox and also in the box was a piece of paper inviting me to use a 'techie' to do it all for me for 70 quid - easy set up? - I think not. My apologies for the non-technical speak here and for the length of this post but I have nowhere else to turn and feel like throwing both livebox and laptop in the bin!! Many thanks in advance to anyone who can help me with my dilemma.

once you turn on your wireless with the hotkey then you must search for avalible networks in your area.

this can be done 2 ways

one if you have a wireless connection icon on your taskbar double click it and
select search for avalible networks.

the other way is to goto control panel > networks connection > wireless network connections > search for avalible networks

Hi Deep Blue

Thanks for your reply - therein lies my problem, I don't know how to turn my wireless on. The hot key that has a wireless symbol next to it does not appear to deo anything and the little light that should indicate that wireless is operating does not come on - in essence the 'hot key' does not seem to do anything. I no longer have the operators manual for this laptop therefore I am eager to know if anyone can tell me how to switch the wireless on. Once on I am sure I will be able to work the rest out. Can anyone else offer any suggestions?

Is your hot-key dedicated or something like Fn-F4? Unless it's dedicated, you'll probably need some sort of keyboard drivers installed. And of course, you should be sure your wireless drivers are installed and working correctly. Have you looked under Device Manager to check for any exclamation marks?

are you sure the laptop has a wireless card, just because it has a hotkey and
a wireless light does not mean it came with a wireless card

look in the device manager like That_other_guy :) says and see if you see a wireless device
or a exclamation point

Hehe, I guess I should of mentioned that too :P I checked online and found the computer commonly came with a wifi card, but I guess it still may not have one.

And it's the_other_one

To The_Other_One and Deep Blue, Thank you both for trying to help. I have checked device manager and this is what I have: Intel(R) PRO/wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI Adapter, Broadcom 440x10/100 integrated controller and 1394 Net adapter, now I am not a computer wizard so I have no idea what these are but I too was under the impression that my laptop is wireless ready and it appears it is. I don't seem to be able to turn the wireless on using the function key and F anything. Oh what to do???!!!!
