GPU overkill 3 way SLI GTX580 3GB cards would be about it (cant 3 way SLI a 590)
Ram overkill is about anything above 8 GB or so. Gaming , above 4 GB. And above 1600 MHz is overkill.

CPU, above 4 cores, a=and above 4 GHZ is overkill.

You don't have to spend obscene amounts of money for the best of the best. A 6950, which goes for around $200-300 would destroy any game out today. My current build is gonna play pretty much all games on max and I'm spending a little over $1000. Don't waste money just so you can brag you have the fastest computer.

really you can max everything for at if not less than 1k, just go with the lowest psu that is good and enough power, like a 6950 unlocked and overclocked a little, a 2500k, gigabyte p67, 4gb's 1600mhz, windows and like a haf 912, a f3 1tb, and a dvd drive, prob cost less than 900 for all that and you can get a antec h60 too and get it up to 4.5ghz

this build will cost me 1150 and I can upgrade the to the HD6970 for 200.00
so total will be 1350.00 out the door

that will get you to where you can play games with highest settings (for most games) but you will not be overkilling it...
