Hey guys, both of these products have a promotional code with them right now, but I'm in the process of building a gaming rig, I'm stuck between these two, I'm going for a budget build, so the Athlon seems more appealing to me, but the Phenom has L3 cache. Will the Phenom really be that much better than the Athlon? I don't plan on overclocking. I'm going to be purchasing one or the other tonight, please give opinions! :D

Thanks guys,
Shea

Well, the 960t also has the potential to be unlocked to a hexa-core if you get lucky. That's always something to consider.

$20?

For a budget build I would be leaning towards the Athlon X4... how much do they actually cost though?

With the promotional:

The Athlon 90$
The Phenom 110$

I am leaning towards the Phenom, mainly because I plan on keeping this rig for a while, and don't want to put anymore money into it after it's built, and in maybe a year or two when it needs it, I will overclock or try core unlocking. Reason being I'm not doing it now, is because that would void the warranty (correct me if I'm wrong).

I would like more opinions though, would it really be that much better for gaming? Thanks for all the help guys.

EDIT: I mean I don't really want to be bottleneck'd with CPU in a year or so.

Well if you're planning to OC later on or try unlocking, then the Phenom would be a lot better option. But compared stock-to-stock, the Phenom isn't exactly leaps or bounds faster. It's faster and definitely not worse as far as bang for buck goes, but probably isn't a game changer (ATM it seems to make a noticeable difference in only a few games). I personally wouldn't get the Phenom for the performance alone, but since you seem to want to tweak it in the future, it would definitely do a better job.

yeah, i'd say phenom all the way, overclocks way better and more stable since athlons have to use the fsb to overclock. plus the possibility of 2 extra cores, i think it's worth it.

+1 for Phenom II. Performs better.

My Athlon II 635 @ 3.6GHz performed the same as my 955BE @ stock (3.2GHz). And with the 955 at 4GHz, it's a whole lot faster.

If you can spare the extra $20 for the Phenom, do it. I have that Athlon, and I'm very happy with it.
I just didn't have that $20 when I was putting together my build. :P
