so i got this new graphics card the other day because my current one which im still being forced to use by the "forces of unfair and cruelty to me" just so i could play this new game i got, F.E.A.R. as my old geforce 4 mx 440 is incompatable with the game.

I formatted my computer to rid all the shit and drivers and everything as most of my computer is new now due to recent upgrades. so i did that. i took out my old graphics card and put in the new one, fastest it in then screwed in firmly down for about 5 seconds i could here angels singing about my new graphics card. (BTW is a cheap but will do the job...)

installed windows XP pro, installed mobo drivers then i installed the graphics drivers. everything went sweet. now the problems started.

the pc was fine for about 10 minutes as i installed aol and other software and all of a sudden the colours just blurred and went into 8bit and low res, even though it was still on 32 bit! eventually everything just froze and the pc switch off, well not off but just into this spaz mode it has where it see's the need to make you look at pitch black while the computer is in standby mode, something like that.

and tried several times to fix it but as soon as windows loads a minute after, sometimes before, the same thing happens. sometimes it just goes into spaz mode, or sometimes the colours all mix and go shitty and then crash.

surely my graphics card cant be incompatable with the main board or something like this.

the motherboard im running is ASUS K8V - X SE
grpahics card - ATI RADEON 9550 256 MB DDR (Latest Chipset) AGP8X TVOUT

This sounds like what happened to me when my Asus Ti4200 started dying. It didn't turn off the PC but the res went out the door with colors and patterns that could only be designed by an insane person. The card had to go and Asus' tech help was terrible. I strongly suspect your vid card was DOA. Do you have anyway to test your new vid card in another motherboard. By the way, what is your motherboard?

my motherboard is asus k8v x se

im gonna get my friend to test it as hes a pc pro. i dont have any other motherboard to test it on.

did you try to update the new slot for the ati card? That's what I have to do. Or Did you try to install the software and reboot. Every video card needs a new slot if it doesn't work. I'm not sure. I don't think I have to update mine because I used the ati 9800 pro and it works great. :)

im not sure what yu mean, updating the agp slot, how do i do that

basically i formatted everything, installed mobo drivers with updated agp drivers (if thast what you mean) then tried the g card which failed.

im gonna get this graphics card tested and if it works, im gonna sell it and just buy a new one, dam i bloody hate computers, all this for just a 30 quid game, it best be good

uhh... theyre wrong. what is it just lagging? cuz the 9550 is a really... not too decent card. plus f.e.a.r. takes alot of system memory...
just gimme your system specs, like proc, ram amount/speed... the such. one of those could be a problem with it :)
make sure everythings on low quality, that could help :)

Did you read his entire post? He can't even view his desktop properly, it's definetly a hardware problem. F.E.A.R. has nothing to do with it.

It could be a faulty graphics card. Return it if possible and get another one.
Also, formatting your PC isn't necessary most of the time, you could have saved yourself the trouble of doing all this and just posted what is wrong with your machine in the first place.

And lastly, the 9550 (when it finally works) will not run F.E.A.R. to your liking. Unless you enjoy low framerates and very low settings.

Yea, i agree with 4w4k3, a 9550 wont run f.e.a.r. for a hoot. I have a 9550 in one of my computers and i tryed to play F.e.a.r and when someone runs by the door it looks like 4 pixels moving, not good graphics if you ask me. if i was you i would return your g-card, try another 9550 and if that doesnt work, return it again and get something else, also contact asus and see if they have any idea. If i was you i would return the card and go to newegg and buy a 9600XT for $90 or so.
