Ati Radeon Video Card problem!!!

Dear forum members, how are you all?:)

I had this query about my graphics cards...I have two AGP cards, namely Ati radeon x1950 and HD3850...

Up until recently, the HD 3850 was working well...with games such as Devil May Cry 4, Tomb Raider Underworld and Turok...a few days ago I begin to run into problems...what was happening was that the game ran for a few minutes, then i either got an error message (something like 'this program has encountered a problem and will now close, we are sorry for the inconvenince caused') or the running game crashes, and I get an blue screen with shite writing, telling me something like 'if this is the first time you have read this message, the run system check'....:(:(:(


Now, I firstly thought that it was something up with my hard drives (AS MY SYSTEMS SPECS WERE EQUIVALENT TO OR BETTER THAN MY GAME SPECS)...but when I placed my x1950 card into my motherboard and installed its drivers, all may games ran without any problems, only at a slower and choppy framerate with worse graphics than the HD 3850....

Now...bearing in mind the HD 2850 is better than the x1950 to some extent, what would be causing these problems? :confused::confused::confused:Could it be a power supply problem? I have never encountered this problem before, with a 1 GB RAM, and 400W power supply....plus I have used a single or two hard drives in the past too....:(

I double checked the system...and it said the HD 3850 card was working well, and that all drivers were installed...all programmes run well, even my interent...but once i start a game...it dissappears...piff paff poof!!!:eek:

Could someone help me please? That would be very kind of you!!!!!:cool::D
 
the card sounds like it is faulty. Is the cooling fan on it working properly?

It might be time to buy a new PSU as well, the 400w sounds like some generic one that comes with most cases, they are not too good.

Thanks for your reply....well, the fan is a thing i forgot to metnoin...if i am not running games, it is running...however, it does stop runnign during gameplay...and i assume that this happens as a result of crashing/stuttering (or causes the game to crash/stutter)...

I dont think the card is faulty....the system setup shows that the device is working propely, in control panel.....why, do you think it is faulty??? How can it be so???

So about the 400 W power supply...you are saying that even though it has worked well in the same motherbaord set up in the past, its suddenly decided to thwart gameplay by meddling with the graphics card...or is something else getting in the way of gameplay????
 
Power supplies degrade over time, therfore they don't produce their rated power. how long have you had this system? it might be time for a new one.

As for the card, go to the Ati website and download the latest drivers. here is a link:

When you run the setup, select UNINSTALL to remove the old drivers, them reboot, run the setup, and select install, then express.

I dunno man....I got the comouter 2nd hand...I suppose it could not be more than 10 years old...as it supports many of the new games upto 2009...even though its AGP, and the fact it can take more than 1gb of RAM.....

Well...if you are syaing the fan is faulty...how come the x1950 card is not crashing, hmmm??? Once a person told me that its the distribution of wattage across the motherboards and its peripherals that counts....if a card states say 500-600W of power on the box specs, it does not mean that it will require a really high watt power supply to sucj out as much watts as possible (and at the same time distribute power to all peripherals like the DVD drive or hard drive)....

People have different views...and experiences....I just get confused sometimes...but all was well and good with games such as Tomb Raider Underworld and Devil May Cry 4....

Which reminds me...Devil May Cry 4 ran superperbly with my X1950 card...only when the characters were really close up (e.g. in the cutscenes) would textures and things appear fuzzy-wuzzy or jagged....the HD 3850 smoothed that out and added a bit more poilsh to what was on screen....until of course the recent problems......TR Underworld was QUITE choppy with my x1950, but it ran really smoothly with my HD 3850....

Also...regarding the Ati drivers on the web that you refer to...do you reckon the ones whihc came with the card (on CD) would be dodgey or duff?? Would the ones online be better???

Online drivers are better because they are up-to-date. If you're lucky, the newer drivers may fix your problem.

Does your fan turn off after or before crashing?

I'm gonna agree here with linkin, it's either a bad Video Card, or poor power supply.

Well the fan stops turning, and the game stops running, as far as I am aware...when I get the error message/blue screen, I restart the machine, and its up an running again (the fan, that is)....

I shall try out the new drivers online and let you know how I get on....

Well well well...would you believe it?

I have tried installing the new drivers that I found online...everything gets installed apparently...then I reboot the system...and lo and behold it says that my system has the default monitor on (i.e. not the HD 3850, with teh currently new drivers!)

And the...Ati si asking me to rregister with them (for online support, warranty, etc) and as soon as I try that nothing happens!!!!

Either the new drivers are even more duff than th ones i already have on CD, or....something else??? Dont tell me the power supply is getting in the way again!!!!

Also...regarding the blue error screen I was refferring to earlier....i noticed at the end it says system dump...then it starts counting, 1, 2, 3, etc.....wot in the world is this??!!??

Also...device manager is not detecting any installed drivers..i have treid to reinstall then reboot my system 3 times now...but nothings happened!!!!!
