ATI video cards comparisons

:confused:Hi all, i am currently running an ATI radeon x700pro 256 MB ram PCI expressX16, on windows xp pro, amd 3500+ 2.2 MHz cpu, with a decent side bus, 2 gigs of 3200 ddr ram, not ddr2. BF2 runs great, but i'm wondering how much of a boost i'll get from changing to an ATI radeon X1600pro 512 MB ram PCI expressX16. also, i have a 350 watt power supply, and so far, i haven't found anything on the power requirements of the 1600 pro. thanks for any help!

Welcome to the Computer Forum! http://www.computerforum.com/70672-official-welcome-thread.html Just a reminder to new members to review the http://www.computerforum.com/52038-forum-rules.html

A better model to look at since the X700 Pro isn't too shabby would be the Radeon X850 256mb card for gaming. You won't see much jumping from a 256mb model to a 512mb card as a rule. With the same model cpu and 2gb of DDR400 here I manage with the Radeon X1300 Pro 256mb that offers less in way of pixel pipelines as the model you have there. A haftier supply in the 430w-480w range with the 20+4pin power connetor will allow for moving into a newer case later as well as leaving some surplus power for the current build. The X1600 Pro wouldn't see any large power demand for stick use if you decided to go with that model. But a larger supply won't hurt.

The x800 is SM2.0, so I wouldnt recommend that either.

But I WOULD NOT go with the x1600/x1650PRO series, especially the 512MB, they have to be the worst cards out there. If you want a budget card, go with the 7600GS/GT. But if you can afford it, the 7950GT would be a much better choice.

The make and model you end up with will depend on your price range more then anything. For $40 don't expect much. What is the maximum approximate price range you will spend?

oh, about $200,thanks for sharing your expertise everyone! also, i did find a 7950gt for $250 at the craigslist website for madison wisconsin under computers. still not sure of the power requirements on that card either.

If you're willing to buy that 7950gt then i suggest, for just alittle more, A 8800gts

A minimum 400W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 26a)

:)

PNY? give me a break! A BFG, EVGA, or some better make would be the recommendation for spending $300 on a card. PNY has always been a lower end brand for memory as well as other things.

For paying out $99.99 more for a card the EVGA 8800GTS looks good at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130038 But you are looking at the $200 and under price range not the latest and higher cost for a replacement. The $200 limit sees the EVGA 7950GT for $199.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130074 or the BFG version of the same for the same at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143090

An extra hundred just for the name? Thanks but no thanks, I'd take my chances with the PNY.

There probably isn't much of a difference anyway..

The price difference seen between the PNY and the others(BFG, EVGA) is only about $30-$40 there. One was seen at $329.99 while the PNY is seen for $269-. Not going over $200 the BFG 7950GT was the best of the two found at newegg. That has a slightly faster core as well as memory clock seen there.

Ok. That seems abit more reasonable.

This why I asked what was the max price for a new card. Presently I'm looking to upgrade the case here without spending a fortune for the latest card out either. I have to weigh in a good card along with a new board, cpu, nmemory, sound card, plus Vista ready video capture card to add in. Plus newegg is rather low on inventory lately.
