ATI X1400 Display Driver

I have a Lenovo T60 with an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 Video card. OS is Windows 2000. I am using a second monitor, Acer AL1916. The problem I have is that I am unable to set up operation in "extended" mode(two monitors displaying independently of each other.) I can "clone" (same display on both monitors) or "stretch" (the two monitors treated as a single large display.) The extended mode is listed as an option in the ATI Catalyst Control Panel, but selecting it has no effect, nothing changes.
Do I need a second display card/adapter to be able to use extended mode or is there a way to do that with one card?
Would appreciate any help I can get.

Have you tried updating to the latest drivers? It sounds like a driver problem more than a hardware issue. The T60's x1400 can drive two independent displays.

Also, have you tried switching modes from within the Windows Display properties panel instead of the ATI panel?
